Someone needs to publish instructions now on how to DIY fab and we're all set. I did this a billion years ago in college, but with much simpler devices.
Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

However, social media has created a highly efficient way for false stories to reach millions in a hurry. In what seems like an eternity ago, false information was occasionally shared via viral email. The success of these misinformation campaigns was dependent on each recipient forwarding the email to a new group of readers – in other words, failing to demonstrate critical thinking. At that time, a viral email containing fake news was problematic, but it only reached a limited audience.
And before anyone starts calling conspiracy theory,
Given how far astray critical thinking has often taken
us, maybe it’s time to
embrace the Millennial Generation’s approach and see if
it leads to even
better results than the preferred methods of older gen
erations.
Restaurant food prices are going up, but food price are going down. Restaurants are for special occasions and rich people. Learn to cook, you can easily make restaurant quality food for a fraction of restaurant prices. You can save thousands of dollars per year.
The markup on food is probably as low as it's going to go. Other things such as automation might bring it down a little, but even with manual labor, the overhead is quite low.
Think of someone picking onions. You could pick 1,000kg/hr. If you paid someone $100/hr to pick onions, that would only be adding 10 cents/kg. A person goes into the store to buy some onions, changing the price by 25cents/kg is not going to alter anyone's purchase plane.
The PC put most mainframers out of work. In 1983 a PC cost $9,000 (inflation adjusted). Today an equivalent PC costs less than $5 on ebay. Think of all those computer operators that were put out of work and bring back the mainframe. Think of the jobs that would be saved by reversing the deflation of computing prices.
Yes, uid is new. People weren't as anti tech as they are now though.Eg, drones used to be popular and cool here because they really opened a lot of possibilities of what you could do. Like fpv flying into dangerous situations or maybe something like changing a light bulb on top of a 1,000m radio tower or drug delivery to remote island. I remember a team was using a rat or fishbrain to fly a jet simulation. Now any mention of drone is largely met with Ima go get my shotgun.

We'll be honest, we don't even care that we'd be wearing video glasses. It looks like incredibly fun.
Are there any crowdfunded projects that have lived to be successful long term businesses that sell products or services? The only ones I ever hear about are the likes of solar roadways, or something that everyone says is a great idea (or more likely a stupid idea that goes viral over its stupidity), then you never hear from them again.
What would 1976 predictions of 2001 computer investment have looked like?
The big thing that everyone said about computers when I was in college was that someday a basketball court sized computer would fit into your pocket. And was a lot later than 1976, though it had been around then too IIRC. I know this because everyone was dumping money into faster and faster computers while I, and a small minority of others, kept asking where's our pocket computer because it became fast enough three cpu generations ago.
There was a lot of wintel money to be made convincing people they needed more GHz, bigger towers and megabytes, so I guess we had to go down that path till it burnt itself out.
I think the reprap is far from complete. Personally, I think something like petman being able to run all of the machines and perform the assembly required to create itself is a lot closer.
Almost. Add transistor for dtl.

Haha. I was just reading about the mouse experiment.
Competition. And in reality, nobody is making $100/hr picking onions, more like $10 (I used to be an onion picker).
But how much is that mainframe vs vendor lock-in with a solution provider who just happens to sell them? DEC?

Trying to make a self reproducing box is a silly and futile endeavor and people have been looking at the problem inside out.

Not as bad as child molesters
I think they got most of it

Most of my friends from college are either retired or really don't have to work if they don't want. And that started in our late 30's/early forties.
Think of it as an official acknowledgement and leaves everything else up to a jury to decide.
I wonder if we could 3D print a newspaper.

it would be anti-PC. Or anti-internet in the 90's
The technology was a clone of the Vax/VMS $phone AC@slashdot.org command.
still a large divide in access
Not as large as the divide in desire for internet.
There were a few people before Wozniak.
would we still get daily updates on them, or would /. switch to daily updates on GM?
