  1. Another slew of patent lawsuits? on Perens Looks For Payback for Open Source · · Score: 1

If a piece of software is liscenced to you, but the technology is then sold to someone who patents it, do you lose your right to freely distribute it?

What makes the rights they bought more legal than the rights you were GIVEn?

  2. Responsibility of the scientific community! on How Solar Sails Work · · Score: 1

The scientific community has a responsibility to the public to limit the information which it reveals, or to release the information in a more controlled medium. When I first came online , I was excited. I was going to be able to teach my children interesting things via multimedia, we could explore together!

Then my youngest came to me and asked to explore on her own. I saw no problems with that. Sadly, that child has been lost to me. She came across the site of a man who believed that "Information was to be free" and began to browse. My daughter was naieve. She was a victim, one of the first victims of this 'information revoloution.'

On this site she learned about the republican party. I don't know if I can put across the loss our whole family experienced when she joined that same party.

And now my eldest boy is downstairs, with our family cat in tow. He's been using my tools, and making a racket. I was worried and so I checked in his room, and what did I find, this slashdot article on how to make a solar sail.

Take some responsibility for your actions.
I won't lose another child because of this 'revoloution'

  3. I beta-tested Diablo three on Diablo II: Lord of Destruction · · Score: 1

I've been working with the beta-testing team on diablo three. So far it's fantastic!
Only problem is, when your character buys stock in the crazy demon "oh no I'm a princess, help me" underworld, the linux stock is always $1 by the end of the day. It's creepy.

I like Diablo, it's a pretty good example of Rogue for people who like pretty pictures.

  4. Hacker as an antihero on Hollywood and Hackers · · Score: 1

The hacker as an antihero is popular in books, and has been for a long while now. We have the entire genre of cyberpunk as a good example (and no, I don't mean to imply that cyberpunk is just about hackers in the traditional computer sense) Movies about hackers don't have a good enough understanding of computers to realize that it's not just a fancy special effect that'll bring people in. They have straight up villans and heros. It's not bad because it's inaccurate. Lots of things are innacurate but fun. It's just too simple. It's an idiotic black and white portrayal.

  5. But will it be hands on? on Paul Allen Buys Old MITS Building · · Score: 2

I don't know about the rest of you, but what's the point of having an old-computer museum if we can't play with the technology.

"Ah yes, the old hands-on-imperative" they'll say, "those were the days!"

Hey kid, get the heck away from my PDP.

  6. There's this Giant led sign with an ir port on Agenda Linux PDA Finally Out · · Score: 2

There's this Giant led sign with an ir port at the casino in my city. A BIG sign. It has blinky lights, and beckons to me. It says 'hiro, you need this pda. Hack me, hiro. And then buy some disposable cell phones and crank call washington'

  7. Multiuser? on Agenda Linux PDA Finally Out · · Score: 4

It would be interesting to allow multiuser access to this kind of device. I'm not sure at what level the ir communication is at, but it is certainly possible, and would be neat.

Too many people begrudge neat for it's own sake. I think that it's by playing with things that are neat, which we are passionate about, that we make the truley innovate advances.

I think that the ability to code for these things yourself is fantastic. Are there many tech companies who write client-oriented software for these things? Who do 'solutions?'

  8. What do you think of bastille? on Ask Robert Young · · Score: 1

Red Hat gets a lot of flak for security, and I was wondering if you guys had seen bastille linux? Have you considered using it, or something similar of your own to educate users about security when they sit down to their first linux installation?
