  1. Re:The two major questions about EMPs. Anyone? on U.S. Air Force Developing Microwave Weapon · · Score: 1

this exact scenario was brought to the attention of congress in june of 1991 by the testimony of winn schwartau. the cost of building a HERF gun (less disruptive than EMP but disruptive enought) is like 450$.

  2. EMP already used jan16,1991 against Iraq on U.S. Air Force Developing Microwave Weapon · · Score: 2, Informative

According to Cybershock (winn schwartau) an EMP payload was used against an Iraqi Air Defense Radar Installation. It was shot from a navy deestroyer in the Red Sea, travelled 450 miles and wiped out the radar center's electronic capabilities.

"In 1999 US and NATO used EMP and HERF (high energy radio frequency) against the Serbs' electonic infrastructures according to MSNBC" - cybershock

schwartau testified to congress in june 1991 about HERF guns and EMP/T bombs, mentioning how cheap it would be to build one and take out Wall Street.

there is still a large issue with many/most sound applications not working in classic. there is still no mention of providing true audio support in classic.

that's the only reason i boot into os 9 now, though by 2003 i'll be off of that.

  4. billions die, fossil fuels run out by 2030 on Danish Goal: 50% of Electricity from Wind · · Score: 1

just thought i'd mention this site: dieoff.com basically world population is going off the scale, and fossil fuels will be gone by 2030, so yes we'd best have some alternative energy sources by then. i think the probability of a large die off is as inevitable as the growth, but i also think other technologies will kick in by then and the rich will continue to be rich and lit up. one issue currently is that china's fossil fuel needs are increasing, making US control of what's left pretty critical. hence the war etc. also read on the site criticisms of fuel cells and nuclear power.

  5. Re:When you want something done properly... on Apple Buys Emagic · · Score: 2, Interesting

    >...do it yourself. Apple's probably getting sweaty palms that the major audio apps are dragging their feet porting to OSX.

actually the core-audio api is still changing to a significant degree, so the blame really is on apple. in particular, audio input hasn't really solidified. (hence things that have no audio input like Live and Audacity have already ported) but since core-audio is such a great solid system, no one is complaining that much. in fact, core-audio is sufficiently different that many of the old hacks that all audio code depended on to achieve accurate timing are now irrelevant. so porting is really reworking, and a major rewrite of basic code.
but the fact that so many audio programs aren't yet out gives the impression to all my music centric friends that "nothing works under x yet".
