"I have news for you. The Americans PAID for the Russian module." I have some history for you. The Russians wouldn't be in the state they are in where they can't afford moduals if it hadn't been for Reagan purposely bankrupting them. I realize that is a simplifacation but there is some truth to it. As for the UN, yes it is payback; not for critisizing human rights abusers, but for having a greater than 2:1 ratio of the % of world air-pollution we produce, to our percentage of the world population. We also catagorically refuse to sign any treaty to reduce said population. Our new administration is evidence that undermines Darwinean Evolution too, I don't even want to get into that though.

I would not consider being allowed to travel to space a trophy or anything like a medal given to those who've demonstrated valor in combat for their country. In fact I'd say it's an insult to holders of the Purple Heart and to trophy holders(albeit not as big of an insult to the trophy holders). A trophy is given to the winner of a competition, a medal to a hero. An expedition to space is not trophy, it's an expensive, dangerous, and long-distance trip, but it's still just a trip. The only thing that a trip has ever cost is the bravery to take it and the resources or money to do it. Space walks aren't handed out as awards, but the Russians can hand them out for money if they so please, this has absolutely nothing to do with America.

For the Russians, who have every right to do what they did, there was price Tito had to pay that they'd take him to space for. He paid it with money that he had earned. If he earned the money that the voyage cost him and paid for it, than he earned the trip.

You know, it occurs to me that every person in America with a conection to NASA (like John Glenn) really had a lot to say about Tito getting into space. I've even seen /.ers bitching about it. Guess what, he went up in a RUSSIAN ship and had to sign a legally binding contract saying that he wouldn't touch anything on the American part of the station. What gives anyone out of Russia the right to act offended? Not only did Russia get over $20 million dollars out of the deal (and do they ever need all the cash they can get), they set a precedent for a method of helping to pay for missions in space. The fact that NASA tried to block him from going up (they expected Russia to fold too) and that every damn politician in this country passed judgement on it and acted like it was an area in which they had supreme authority reeks of haughtyness. Maybe things like this are why the US was voted off the Human Rights commission for the UN as well as the International Narcotics Control Board a few days ago. Just something to think about next time we feel like giving orders to another country.

  5. Oh come ON! on Unmanned Combat Aircraft · · Score: 1

It's too bad that nobody important in the US has ever seen Gundam: Wing, it deals with issues like unmanned war machines. No country is going to submit to defeat just because you've killed all of their little toys, humans just aren't that smart. As soon as they've run out of unmanned weaponry they'll send live troops in. Even if the US is the only country that gets the technology for this (not gonna happen) this is still a bad development. The risk of our own boys dying in battle is the only setback (from a general's point of view anyhow) to war. If we don't have any reason to not use violence to solve a conflict with another country we'll start using it far too often and I don't relish the thought of having something my tax dollars paid for slaughtering other people just because they pissed us off. From a military point of view I don't see how this concept is viable either. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are ways for the enemy to scramble or block basically any signal being sent from a jet back to a command center. I would think that would render the idea useless. (If they want to port the plane's AI over to an air combat game I'd have no problem with that though :D )

What I meant was, the idea behind the cDc, a bunch of geeks and techies that crack oppressive and/or unwanted DCMA-abusing stuff, is a good one. If the cDc isn't big enough and doesn't have the knowhow to do things like that, than they either need to get the ability, or something else like the cDc ought to form that has the power to circumvent these denials of freedom.

The digital watermarking of cds and dvds, filters in public institutions, the amount of data that big corporations can collect about us, etc... I find it worrisome that there is virtually no public outrage about these things. The cDc is the perfect kind of group to take care of business.

Which dropped like a rock but now seems to have (at least temporarily) stabilized. Over the past couple of years a bunch of companies were overfunded that had bad business plans or just had too many compeitors. The recent report has shown that the economy will be fine; with all the badly thought out startups calling it quits though, the stock market may make it seem like we're crashing. Don't worry about it too much unless your lively hood is on the line, consumer confidence is too important in our economy to panic because the bloated Nasdaq is culling the weak from the herd.

They talk about how unfair it is and I almost laugh; they forget about the impoverished masses abroad and at home and try to get rid of a tax who's only purpose is to slightly redistribute wealth. Moore on the other hand, just gave away half of his fortune to fund research at universities and conservation efforts. What a guy! I wish more of the upper class had the same view on life as he has. A lot of the posts on this thread were Moore bashing and after reading that article I don't see how any liberal/radical (and that is what I'm guessing those who hate Intel based on its monopoly are) could still harbor some strong disliking against him. Moore cares about many of the issues I care about. Remember, Intel may be a monopoly now (for all intents and purposes) but it wasn't always. They rose to the top because they had the best products at the time. No matter what your thoughts on Intel now try to have some respect for Moore as a rich man who cares about important things that are ignored by the government. As for his involvement in the Bush campaign (and I _hate_ Bush), the best way to change an organization is from within it. (Especially when the leader needs to be thought for:)
