Yes I have some email addresses that left totally unchecked can get 5MB of spam email a day and let me tell you that is a lot of text to filter thru by hand.
"It wouldn't be much of a world without the progress the mentioned have brought."
I know it would be more honest. Damn those MBA types are known for thier generosity and compassion.
NOT!
"Let's not turn this into a 'screw the capitalists' thread, as it won't go anywhere."
Then lets not turn every hobbiest or OSS contributer into a "dirty hippie" and were square.
"The missing piece is that all of us contribute to open source for something. Whether it's cash, items from an Amazon wishlist, or just looking to feel good, it's still economics."
How about teaching people to run thier hardware without forking out cash. Is that still economics? I think that people that work on software for free do it because they enjoy it not because of some form of commerce.
"Mr. Fleury needs to realize that; economics goes well beyond currency."
Mr. Fleury is an arrogant ass that would do good to learn something called tact.
"I think his point is that if you are doing it for money, there's a good chance that you're more commited to the project as it is very possible that your lifestyle depends on the success."
I totally disagree people that do it because they love it are usually more thorough as with paid help has no incentive to go "past the call of duty" and will usually do the bare minimum to collect a paycheck (as that was the original goal anyway to them) but when you do it because you like to do it most do a more complete job regardless of time or money typically (as the process was it's own reward).
I get what you are saying and I disagree with the notion however that everything comes down to some form of commerce or it's not worthwhile.
I agree shouldent all of those corporate sleazebags be using microsoft products anyway? I liked the day when worrying about commercialization of linux or any other OSS project was not even a thought. I would be for leaving the MBA's and asskissers to thier own profit driven world.
using GNU software is a great way show small and medium companies how to sever the ties with expensive to licence commercial software. It also has the effect of putting commercial software zealots out of work.
yea lest we forget firewalls either. More machines running linux to keep windows machines free from "bad people". Seems everytime I look MS is needing somebody else to save them from themselves. I like the part where they kill competitors out of sheer gratitude. Now that is the way to run a business... ruthlessly!
Im not saying that virii arent in existance for unix or linux it just seems that most A/V for linux seems to be geared at protecting windows machines from the real world. Seems that linux is the armor protecting the sheep (windows) from slaughter.
Your joking right. My sense of sarcasm isint doing well today. With new 2257 regulations that are going into effect this month most are actually dumping sites and getting out of the business. I believe that.xxx is only another hurdle to curtail people from entering the market. One registrar and hideously expensive registration fees per domain.
Adult is definatly not the way to go now. Unless you have tons of cash.
Who in the hell modded that insightful some MS fanboy no doubt. Why do they hang around slashdot.
Hey just because you don't understand it doesnt mean it sucks. Let me know when windows does something useful that hasnt been done better or first by someone else.
So then im sure that congress is going to do something to compensate webmasters for all the dot com domains that adult sites are on now. Whats that? NFW guess im not switching especially with as expensive as those domains are.
Yea because between my car dying and being stranded along side of the road, and having an aircraft engine die mid flight. I know the car incident is really going to stick out in my mind.
"The problem is, I have yet to see an interface for *nix that does as good as job as windows does of 'packing everything under the hood' and making an operating system that (as a friend of mine, the chief sysadmin for Connectiv would say) "protects users from their own stupidity"."
Yes because Joe and Jane six pack (ive always wanted to make them a couple like Ken and Barbie) have always been really well protected from themselves. Downloading and installing every piece of shareware crap that they can find then install with a few clicks with administrative access to the machine. Then repeat this process till the system tray meats the quick launch bar. And it isint windows until icons cover 3/4 of your desktop at 1024 x 768 at least! Yea sure windows really protects it's users from itself. In a boxed unix solution nobody goes out to fetch tons of crappy software they couldent install anyway. Windows keeps people from being intimidated by advanced hardware that a PC really is. This is where windows got it right with the patented "plug and pay" interface. MS ought to drop that "where do you want to go today" crap and say Windows so easy to install even a snot nosed kid can do it. Ok im done writing my version of the trollish crap that article was.
"There's big money to be made in nanotech, and if people can't do it legally, they'll do it illegally, and I'm betting that the people who are bold enough to disregard the regulations won't really put too much thought...not to mention funds...into safety."
Well thats fine then we can throw thier asses in prison where we put law breakers. Freeze thier assets for cleanup of the "lab".
I think it's great im a AMD guy myself but that is because im flat broke but still want performance. Apple makes great looking hardware and dual G5 is definately cool. Many people have access to any hardware they want with this magical thing called a network so im sure that linus has run patches against x86 machines. Also he states that many others (kernel developers) do run x86 platform so it's no big deal what he runs anyhow.
I thought that linux was created to do cool stuff with!
I hope he starts hacking away on common PVR hardware soon that would be cool.
If you do finally memorize 4Fy&x*Gw or better it should last longer than a few months. They can require more but be aware I will write that down somewhere.
I wish I had mod points I would mod your post up definately deserves more points. The point of public research is it help the PUBLIC! Many don't get it at all. Why in the hell would I use my tax dollar to help a private company? Are they going to provide me with a free product? If we give them "free" research money that came from our pockets are we going to get "free" product as a result? Very easy to me.
Well many of the things on your list would sell if the infrastructure was there. Do you think cars would sell as well if only 10% of the country covered by roads? I doubt it.
The problem is that cheap high speed net access needs to be the norm for many of these services to fly. Without the infrastructure your service will not sell. That is what led to the dot bomb was rolling out services that could not support themselves with existing infrastructure and bad marketing. As soon as everyone has a big pipe to thier house at a reasonable price many of these services will actually take off.
Seriously dedicated service is cheap and plenty of bandwidth I have had my site hosted with these guys for a long time and the price is right. Heres the URL www.powerstorm.net
Not meaning to spam but they might be able to help out for a small budget.
yes it is it was a work of the producing website and most content is usually stamped as such. Almost always on the website itself and many times on the content as well. That being said most don't usually sue over filesharing unless you go to the big players in the game like ALS scan who has even sued newsgroup services over a coulple of binary newsgroups that shared thier content. Many websites don't mess with it as most understand that some filesharing is really good for business. The try it before you buy it really works.
When I first tried Linux I started with redhat 5.0 and got a bad taste in my mouth toward linux at first. Things that really irked me personally were that every time I had to compile anything from source that I had to install a diffrent compiler from the get go. Seemed like they were always including some version of gcc that sucked. I dident care for the way that network interfaces were handled. RPM worked great for the redhat packages but for every 3rd party package it was dependancy hell as there always seemed to be some strange lib that was always needed but no reference to the package name! I applaud thier efforts but thier distro was definately not for the desktop. Of course I should shut up because I am now very pleased with using slackware on my servers and on the desktop. I know there are better distros for desktop linux but slackware is very easy to use for just what you want and nothing more. I can compile without having to replace gcc right off the bat and package management is easy any way you want to go. I wish them the best of luck and they are a great choice if you need support but if not there are better distros out there.
Thats true there arent a lot of choices but IBM and Sun are also making big iron as well. Cray is not the only way to go nowdays. Even if you land an order for one machine the only income as a company you will have is a support contract. How long are you going to have a company if you only sell 2 units or less a year? Don't get me wrong I would love for the kind of research that these machines excel in to pick up in the US but it doesent seem to be happening. Worse than that I would hate to see Cray computing to become another government subsidy!

Wait that is the way business is done here.

"a) 580watt is it's rated maximum power output, on all three voltage rails combined."
From TFA
580Watt continuous output. (Peak Load 630 watts)

Thats ok with me if we leave profits to a dangerous substance for some other country to kill itself with. Your rich but im alive so who wins?
Thats ok you keep the money and the goo.

They can always enable it with popup whitelist from sites you want. Still a better default than getting annoying popups.
"What the hell is Groove Networks?"
Makers of remote office software.
"Why should I care that MS bought them?"
You shouldent unless you owned stock in them and if you do let me borrow a few thousand bucks.
Thanks,

I have no problems skinning my player. Could it be the platform it runs on perhaps.
Screw it it's only Karma!
I know it's flaimbait but it's a bonus of learning something new. Linux is the best A/V
