  1. How appropriate... on Jabber As The Coming IM Standard? · · Score: 1

    And unlike psydelics, it's legal.

I don't think we should joke about illegal narcotics. Sure, we all did acid back in the sixties, everybody was doing it. However, in the current age of zero tolerance, I don't want my child using drugs or staring at a computer screen full of crazy swirling colors!

  3. A few learned answers on Slashback: Flesh, Porn, Smells · · Score: 1

"Is final knowledge of the processes which led to the genesis of life on earth possible?
No. I sense a touch of hubris here...

    Will science bring us immortality?
Come on now. Who wants to live forever? Don't get me started on the religous argument against this.

Are we alone in the Cosmos?
In spite of millions of dollars spent, NO EVIDENCE has been found in the whole universe. If this were a jury trial, the defendant would have been found "not guilty" long ago.

What are the odds of meeting an extraterrestrial civilization?
    See above.

    Is Nature an evolutionary monopolist?
I have a college education, and I don't even know what that means!

What do cloning and genetic engineering portend?
BIG MONEY for doctors, HMOs, and drug companies.

    Will humans produce artificial intelligence?
An interesting question. Sometimes I think that my computer screen is staring back at me... I wonder what it is thinking!

What will be the consequences of the lightning-fast unfolding of communication technologies?"
BIG MONEY for the telecommunications industry. Still, it's an interesting question, considering the Dot-com slump that we've all been hearing about.

  4. Sense or priorities? on Keeping DEA In The Loop About Amtrak Travelers · · Score: 1

I have always been a big fan of public transportation to begin with. Amtrak serves a great purpose and is, for the most part, a safe way to travel quickly to almost any place you might have to go (often within walking distance to the nearest station!).

As for participating in the drug war in America, I am totally willing to live in a "police state" if it keeps even one child from "getting high" or using heroin.

  5. It doesn't make sense on Fuel Cells For (Military) Portable Computing · · Score: 1

... to develop a technology for something that is now obsolete, that is the common ground soldier. Desert Storm proved that wars are best fought and won from the air, using precision weapons the minimize damage to surrounding areas. There is no place for the foot soldier anymore, Vietnam proved that.

  7. The end of mainstream radio? on AFTRA Halts Many Radio Stations' Webcasts · · Score: 2

Does this signal the end of mainstream radio? That would be awful, because now my kids can just hop on the internet and listen to any one of the unregulated DJs spewing their filthy language and disgusting ideas. At least when they listened to Rush Limbaugh via internet streaming, I could still trust the FCC to fine him should he slip and let an occasional swear word through.

  9. Grass roots is the way on Getting Good PR for A Small Company? · · Score: 1

Without a doubt, the most important thing is to be FAMILY ORIENTED. To win the public trust means don't cater to renegades or cyberpunks. I'm a father, and any company that misbehaves will not be getting a nickle out of my wife or our kids (I've already added Yahoo! to the list of blocked sites that my kids won't be visiting when they go on-line. That's the price they pay if they want to sell pornography on the web!).

You might want to adopt fun slogans like "People before profits" or "It takes a cyber-village".

  10. Something is odd here on Solar Sail Craft Damaged · · Score: 1

``At this point it will be at least a three-week delay and it could be more than two months,'' Friedman said.

Three weeks to two months? Most space missions are in terms of years, I don't think this is a major setback.

The project is sponsored by Cosmos Studios, an entertainment company founded by Ann Druyan, widow of the late astronomer Carl Sagan, and Joe Firmage, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and part-time UFO investigator.

Now I'm suspicious. Why are we paying attention to a Russian project, funded by an entertainment company, and promoted by some UFO nut who believes in aliens?

Solar sails could be useful I suppose. As one insightful poster mentioned awhile back (qpt), it's good to explore a non-polluting source of energy. We don't need to go filling up space with our filthy combustion fuels, and using atomic radiation as a power source. All the clean, reliable power we need can be obtained from our sun!

  11. A credit to A.I. on The End Of The Paperclip · · Score: 1

"Not one person in my office, from the receptionist to the sales people to the engineers to the CEO use the blasted paper clip. Not even my wife, who is an elementary school teacher, uses it,"

Have you ever heard the saying, if you're not part of the solution, then you are likely a part of the problem? Of course school teaches and receptionists don't use it, their jobs are as dull as dirt, they don't need complicated solutions like management does. Engineers will whine about it because it's their job to whine, it seems like.

Paper Clip was a leap forward in A.I. technology. There's no need to "dis" it. Something new is bound to replace it.

  15. Needless tech-foolery! on 3D Videoconferencing Over Internet2 · · Score: 1

This is just ridiculous. Do we really want to talk to our friends and neighbors in digital form, rather than converse with them in person? The only thing this will be used for is to spread more smut on the internet!

I suppose it could be useful for say, attending your college classes online, or even broadcasting a science experiment for some audience to see (rather than needlessly repeating it over and over to prove a point).

I have a sneaky suspicion that this is nothing more than a frilly campaign to give the tech industry a boost, due largely to the recent slump in the dot-com business.

  16. Proceed cautiously on Mars Odyssey begins · · Score: 2

Before we rush into this business of serious space travel, maybe we should ask ourselves: is this exploration, or exploitation?

It seems like where ever Man goes, he makes a mess of his new environment. Perhaps it's just our great human arrogance, which we all posess, that we think that we can claim God's creations as our own. In this case, it appears that NASA is desperate to claim some sort of success after its string of startling failures over the last decade. Always good to show some kind of "scientific advancement" or benefit when Congress comes around to budget time. Meanwhile our nation's children are sorely lacking in education... why not spend these billions and billions to perhaps stop kids from smoking, drinking, or trying marijuana?

If even one teen pregnancy could be prevented by diverting such ridiculous sums of money, I think we would all be better off for it.
