  1. Re:efiling a ripoff on Turbo Tax Melts Down on Tax Day · · Score: 1

Although what you say is true, it is irrelevant to me because filing taxes is not a choice I have. Rather the IRS legally requires me to file taxes and thus, if I choose to file electronically, I am by law required to pay $16.95 or whatever it is. Now if the IRS chose to eat this cost as a cost of saving themselves on their internal data entry costs, then I would be ok with it. If the best contractor deal they can find (because of lobbyists or not) that can construct a one time software project with yearly recurring data center costs for 5 billion dollars a year ($17 * 300 million us citizens?), that is not my problem and it frustrates me.

I totally agree this is a rip off. I will never e-file as long as it costs more than mailing a paper form in. If the IRS had any intelligence, it would encourage electronic submission since it would greatly cut down on their data entry expenses. When I feel really annoyed about it all I have even been known to use tax software to prepare my forms and then hand-write the forms that I actually submit. When the IRS stops being such a vindictive pick on the little guy agency, then maybe I won't feel so frustrated.

All you need to do is see a check or credit card and you have everything you need to pay. For a check, electronic transactions simply need an account number and a routing number which are printed clearly on the front of the check. And the same for credit cards. Until the banks come up with better security than that, I have no sympathy for the banks. The keys are printed right on the front.

How would any company ever survive if they can't sell you an incompatible charger at $35 for your house, and $50 for your car, for every single electronic item you buy, and your cell phone that you replace every 7.2 months???

On the T68 (probably T68i also) you can add a number from the caller id. Get to the part where you add a new number (either through add contact or update contact) and either hit the menu button which will bring up the list of all unsaved numbers, or hit the cursor to the left which will bring up a menu where you can select from Phone Book, SIM entries, or Unsaved numbers.

  6. Re:If it's not broken .. on Creating the New Public Network · · Score: 1

I think it is already happening. Many service providers, either in their service agreements or physically in their firewalls, are blocking access to music file sharing programs, or are forbidding customers to provide services of their own like http, mail, chat, etc. Also, assymetric connections prevent customers from using peer to peer video conferencing, high speed file sharing, etc.

The reasons for ISP's not providing a purely raw IP service are many ranging from bandwidth constraints (and profit) to security, however, unless there is some supervision (either by consumer demand or govt regulation), I see no reason for this trend to improve for the consumer.
