  1. Valgrind is king on Memory Checker Tools For C++? · · Score: 1

I've used Purify, Boundschecker, Efence, various hand-rolled stuff and by far the best tool for checking memory access and for leaks is Valgrind. Because of the way it works, it finds all sorts of tricky memory problems at the point that they happen without *any* instrumentation of your program before hand.

The downside is that it only works on linux (and x86 at that), but it kicks ass. It's one of the unsung heros of open source.

    Try if you can.

  2. User space drivers. on Should Linux Use Proprietary Drivers? · · Score: 1

Why not have a USER SPACE driver API. Most things (scanners, mice, cameras etc) don't need a high performance interface just a stable one. Manufacturers could write drivers for that, but there would be no kernel GPL issues and it would not be possible to write root kits and do other unsavoury stuff.

    Why doesn't linux have one?

  4. UK & Europe already has digital TV. on Digital TV Still Indecisive · · Score: 1

The UK & Europe already have digital TV. There's no extra restrictions on copying other than the usual encrypted premium channels. It hasn't caused the destruction of the TV networks. Infact it's strengthened them because they now have more channels to play with.

This is just an obvious ploy by hollywood to control the technology standard settings process. They'll keep doing this one small (reasonable sounding) step at a time, until we're all fucked.

  5. Quantam Encryption on NSA/U.S. Navy Working to Intercept Fiber Optic Cables · · Score: 1

What are they going to do when Quantum Encryption over fiber optics is used? There's absolutely no way they can tap that without alerting the 'enemy'.

  6. Self balancing Unicycle. on Slashback: SmoothWall, Gopher, Be · · Score: 1

Wasn't there a self balancing motorised unicycle in Iain M. Banks' SF novel 'Against a Dark Background'. I'm sure that was before '96.

    That counts as prior art.

  7. Re:Cleanroom? on Dolby Tells NetBSD Project: Don't Decode AC3 · · Score: 1

This has been covered a million times before, but I'll say it again. If a patent is involved it DOESN'T matter if it's a clean-room implementation. The patent holder has EXCLUSIVE rights to the 'invention'. I suspect Dolby has a few patents for AC3.

Whether the patents are valid or not is a separate question.

  8. Re:WAP's not the problem; maybe not even WML on Mobile Phone Industry to Scrap WAP · · Score: 1

Actually WAP was designed by an American company which is now known as phone.com. They have a few patents on it as well, in the true american tradition.

  9. Re:ms on Gracenote Sues Roxio Over Switch to Free Song Database · · Score: 2

Gracenote DID NOT spend time and effort collecting their database. It consists of entries contributed by the USERS. All they provided was the infrastructure. Roxio is not using their infrastructure OR their IP. FreeDBs database is constructed from it's own users not from CDDB.

So Gracenote doesn't have a leg to stand on.

  10. Re:The right decision on Themes Removed At Apple's Behest · · Score: 2

Don't talk rubbish. As long as the theme designers didn't steal the actual bitmaps, Apple doesn't have a leg to stand on. Remember they lost their look and feel suit aganst Microsoft. Countless other look and feel suits have also been lost. It is not illegal as long as the thing being copied is not a trademark, such as the Apple Logo, or a bit-for-bit copy, .

  11. All doctors play god - That's their f****ng job! on Embryo Chosen For Its Tissue Type · · Score: 1

Why is it that everytime doctors do something that pushes the envelope they get accused of 'playing god'. *ALL* medical science is playing god. If people want to respect god's will they must refuse *all* medical intervention and drugs and let 'nature' take it's course (and die probably).

BUT after saying all that I think widespread genetic selection in the general population is probably a bad thing because it will reduce genetic diversity. This will make us very susceptible to global pandemics which could wipe *everbody* out because we're all too similar.

  12. WTF is the marketing nonsense? on Net Security With "NanoProbes" · · Score: 4

That page is so full of marketroid(tm) rubbish, I can't make any sense out of it. It seems like an implementation of tcp/ip fingerprinting, but enhanced with drug abuse by the author.

I suppose you can't underestimate the power of catch buzzwords. Transmeta couldn't raise any finance until they renamed their tech to CodeMorphing. The BDU's will probably fall for it.

  13. Why are people so afraid fo change. on Jaron Lanier Takes On "Cybernetic Totalists" · · Score: 1

Change is good it keeps everything fresh. The last thing we want is artificial limits to be placed on what we can acheive. The ones who want to meld themselves with machines should be allowed to (It will be futile to try to stop them).

Anyway it's not as if there are going to be any sudden changes. It will happen very slowly over many generations. The inter-generational steps will be small and acceptable to people.

Take an Average Joe from three thousand years ago into todays world and he'll probably be horrified by what we have become.

  14. How is the money distributed? on Have You Paid Your Bertelsmann Tax Today? · · Score: 1

The way to make voluntary payments work is for the artist to release his/her work in chunks.

So basicaclly if you like the first track, he'll release the second when (and only when) he's got enough donations from the public through his website. Obviously what constitutes 'enough' is entirely up to the artist and depends on demand, past history etc.

Works great! It's simple and fast.

    Vim has something similar also.

With a Bluetooth enabled PDA and Cell phone. The PDA will access the net using your phone while it's still in your pocket.
