Is it possible that you're being a bit overly optimistic? I wouldn't count on Wine allowing to you run "most" win32 apps on either Linux or OS/2 anytime soon.
IDE drives are cheaper 'cause there's no smarts on the drive itself.
I think that the incredibly low price of IDE has much more to do with market forces than technology. There's way more volume and competition with IDE. -Bruce

Isn't libc a GNU piece of the Linux pie? Try booting without your 'OS' without that. By no means can you say that kernel == OS.

That said, I'm quite happy calling it Linux. I find RMS's personality so objectionable that I'm pleased to call it linux just to annoy him
