The default behavior is to warn the users and log it to the console. The server gets reports (in a managed environment) from the clients running on user's workstations as well. This is good in a corporate environment because then the helpdesk or IT staff gets a call about a virus, and can monitor the network for an outbreak or any other problems that may result. If it just silently nukes any viruses, there could be a disaster boiling under the surface and nobody would ever know.

However, just like any other decent product, you can change the defaults, and in a managed situation, you can do it all from the server. The clients check in with it regularly and receive any config changes and updated client software (if it exists) along with virus definition updates.

Still, using Norton Corp. at home on a single computer in an unmanaged mode is far superior to other AV packages I've seen despite the 'hey I quarantined this, do you wanna attempt a repair' behavior.

Sure, it's easy to rag on Norton AV when all you ever see is the bloat-tastic consumer version, but a managed or even unmanaged client running the corporate edition is hard to beat. I've seen it trap things McAfee didn't even know about months later. Over 100 machines here, all running managed Norton Corp, gigs of email flying in and out daily, and never a single virus outbreak in a 5 year span. That's bragging rights.

Sure, that's one way to look at it, but with Dell taking steps like this, you might be wrong. I work in IT as well, and I tell all of my clients to avoid Vista until there is absolutely no other choice, and thankfully, there are other choices for now. Also at the company I work for, we have roughly 100 users, and there is only one Vista machine in the building. When users ask "when are we switching to Vista" I reply "never". We will use XP until it's EOL'ed like Windows 2000. There is simply too much risk and too much expense involved at this point because every machine here that happily runs XP will need major upgrades to handle Vista with the same amount of responsiveness. Not only that but driver and application support, frankly, have a very long way to go on Vista. The last thing we need is an entire CAD department that can't run their software.

Sure, you can install it on 10 machines if you want, but good luck getting RHN and updates to work on 9 of those if you only have a license for one. We just went through this and ended up using Centos 4.4 on our dev boxes and RHEL (that we paid for) on a single mission-critical server. When Redhat gives you no choice, this is what you must do if you want to run an identical environment for test builds.

Another thing that pissed me off was juggling licenses. I used to have our dev box and production box both registered. The dev box was on a temporary demo license that just never expired. However I only had a single subscription to RHN. I would have to visit the RHN site and disable production and enable the dev box if I wanted to enable it, then go back and undo it when production was ready. It got really stupid and I should have just bought another license..but $1k doesn't grow on trees around here.

There's alot to be said for making Centos 100% binary-compatible with RHEL. Like I tell everyone, Centos is Redhat Enterprise with the stickers removed.

Well and not only that but your body is designed to cope with the state of emergency that happens when a bone breaks. The first thing you get is an incredible rush of endorphins which instantly snipes the pain. If you get enough, you'll get the sweaty upper lip and maybe nausea and shock.

I broke my ankle in half before and thought it was just a hard sprain. Went to bed and woke up the next morning feeling fine until I stood up. The pain made me sick to my stomach and I limped to the bathroom thinking something was about to happen. Once my mom (a lifetime registered nurse) took a look at it, she said something to the effect of "wtf we're going to the ER RIGHT NOW!"

I also broke my elbow or some bones inside of it a few years after that. Never went to the hospital or got it casted, just kinda had my arm in a sling for a few weeks and waited for it to heal. I still have full mobility and of course it bitches when it rains but otherwise it healed fine. I feel your pain though...you never miss an arm until you can't use it. Bathing and bathroom trips are the worst.

Jesus, has everyone forgotten that your DVD backups are violating copyright law and breaking CSS protection? I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but everyone whining about DRM has completely overlooked the fact that starting with VCR tapes and later moving to DVD, content producers have made an effort to prevent the consumer from making copies.

DVDs were cracked..it took a few years. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are both cracked already. The problem right now is that it takes a shitload of hard drive space to rip anything. When you recompress it to shrink it down, guess what? You just lost all that HD quality.

Also DVD burners are dirt cheap, as is standard DVD writable media. On the other hand, Blu-Ray burners are crazy expensive and so is the media. Hard drive space is getting cheaper, but it's still cost-prohibitive to rip BR discs to hard drives.

If anyone wants somewhat small, portable HD content to watch, get an HD tuner card, throw it in a mythtv box with a decent antenna, and record whatever you want. In the meantime, there just aren't many reasonable options.

Also you seem to be proud of players and media formats without copy protection, but even VCRs had macrovision that made copies go all wobbly. Good luck on finding *any* high-def content with no protection.

While I'm in the same boat as you, and I honestly believe that any media I purchase is mine and I should be allowed to make backups, unfortunately the industry as a whole does not agree.

In my opinion the Blu-Ray QC is already flaky with production studios pretty much doing what they want and not really following a standard. Not all discs give you uncompressed PCM, every disc has a different Live Menu, and the codec they choose to encode the disc is usually a mystery. However, it's nothing like the pathetic situation with DVDs where any kid in his basement can (poorly) author a disc.

Yeah I'd say it's FUD because you don't own a PS3 and therefore can't have a valid opinion on the Blu-Ray functionality.

I do own one and the BR support is second to none. Furthermore since it's online, any time Sony finds a bug, they can sneak the fix in with the next firmware update. The PS3 will remain the best BR player despite what anyone else builds. Not only that but tons of magazines have already had showdowns with BR players and the PS3 wins every single time. Speed, ergonomics, correctness, etc. it wins in every category.

Now there are a very small handful of 'video purists' that criticize the lack of 1080p/24fps support which is true film and prevents 4:3 pulldown, but Sony can add support at any time via firmware. Not only that but I have yet to see *any* player support 1080p/24.
