Xbox Spring Update To Offer Codecs, MSN Messenger

adachan writes "It seems that Microsoft has decided to add Xvid playback into the upcoming Spring Xbox 360 dashboard update. Xbox.com has a list of all the upcoming enhancements to the dash. The playback of video using H.264 and mpeg4 codecs seems to be the biggest news for those using the system as a media extender. If this is indeed true, my Xbox Media Center will be used less and less." Update: 04/09 17:29 GMT by Z : MSN Messenger is kinda interesting as well. I would agree with their decission, if I had the option of paying that fee on my own, as an upgradable addon.

Unfortunately, the rumors coming out of Nintendo have been conflicting. From the way they are talking, it sounds like they are launching a Wii2.0 system in Japan this summer, which includes DVD playback, yet the company that they've been dealing with, exclusively, on this front is a software company, suggesting that there is no hardware update at all.

You cannot release a game on the PS2, PS3, NGC, Wii, Xbox or Xbox 360 without getting licensed by the appropriate manufacturer. Likewise, the devkits, APIs etc are supplied by those manufacturers. The console arena is not (and hasn't been for a long time) anything like an open environment. Don't like it? Stick to PC development. As it happens, MS are doing pretty well in terms of opening things up in a controlled way with the XNA system which allows anyone to write their own apps (in C# typically) which have pretty much full access to the hardware. Sony provide Linux on the PS3 but it's hardware access is heavily limited (no GPU for example) and Nintendo offer no developer access at all outside of official dev kits.

I stopped being surprised when I saw Doom playing on a digital camera OS back in 2001.

I would seriously consider Apple TV for my 2nd 37" LCD. I only have the single Xbox 360 and I could theoretically have both Media Center and iTunes pull content from the same files (theoretically with H.264 compatible content) and stream. I have two iPods I need to contend with, so iTunes will be in the picture no matter what, probably on the same server. Profile and sound level are big advantages for Apple TV. Sure, you can get used to the fan noise, just ignore it, or just turn up the volume to masquerade it. But that doesn't cut it for me. As much as I like my modded Xbox classic with XBMC, I rarely use it for watching movies for the same reason. It kind of kills the atmosphere in quiet scenes, and IMHO a media player just should be silent, period. As for the wireless: you can buy the add-on but I refuse to pay 100 euros for something that should not cost more than 30, and should be in by default.

So I guess I'll just keep looking around for some other affordable HTPC-like solution that can do all this silently. Maybe when the Apple TV is fully hacked to run Linux with full HW support and the XBMC porting efforts yield something I will pick up one of these.
