  1. Re:MPEG 4 structured audio... on Linux Cluster For Processing DSP Effects? · · Score: 1

Having experience with this subject matter (digital recordings), I can say a) no comercial quality software supports such a thing and b) the output quality would be very poor. At any rate MIDI at the least take much much much less performance the digital audio I process...my recomendation: set up a cluster, because you CAN cluster with NT/NT and NT/Linux, and use SMP systems, because even though cubase itself isnt designed for SMP, it will still improve performance.

I was not a child prodigy trying to get my college degree at age 9. However, I was a fairly intelligent 9 year old, and while in private school my mom was pressured to allow me to skip gradeS. She didnt, something I'm happy about. Why? I had a torturous childhood because i was constantly more worried about learning stuff than being around other kids, it wasn't until my mom pulled me out of school, started homeschooling me and FORCING me to socialize that I developed ANY social skills, i ended up skipping 7th grade, because i wanted to and could and I'm now happy getting ready to graduate at 17, like a semi-normal kid, and I don't worry about what could have been. I know I am not an idiot (mind you i gots muh poor suthun grammatic skills), and I know what I'm good at and I know how to enjoy myself with other people (I'm still working on this dating thing though!)

I promise you if you try to teach this kid all this technical crap, without teaching him how to be a person first, how to hop fences, throw fastballs, and hit home runs, he'll be worthless with anything related to computers, I'm not saying he needs to be a people person, but he needs social skills, he has 13 years before he's expected by society to perform "useful" functions.

Let him make friends (and dang it teach him how!) Then teach him programming. Then teach him how to impress his friends with programming. For love of God teach him to write a working software DVD player for linux with CSS capabilities! I'm so sick of trying to get xine or oms to work and I'm even sicker of booting to windows jsut to watch a movie!

You geniuses have left out production costs. It costs ALOT of money to make a CD. If you don't like the price of a CD, either a) don't buy them and buy the "warmer" analog tape (which btw, manufacturing wise, cost much less, less as in pennies, for record labels to have made for distribution.) of b) write letters and demand lower prices. I don't bitch and moan about cd prices and i've got quite a collection. They cost no more than tapes used to, and vinyl before tapes and 8 tracks et cetera (remember to adjust fo rinflation.)

Oh btw, you also forgot the overhead of having a website to sell your albums on digitally.

mp3 160kbps 16bit/44.1khz takes up qute a bit of space.

  11. Re:Why pay? on Napster Clone With Pay Per Download · · Score: 1

No buddy, you're the ignorant one! Music production IS expensive, and the bands pay for every penny of it! The labels ONLY pickup the manufacturing cost which is what is cheap. A good studio will run 1000 for a day. multiply that by the 30-60 days it can take to record an album, add to that the price of a producer which is usually 1 to 2 percent of all album sales (up until he or she dies....) then another half of a point for the enginer, who instead might be paid a flat fee or say 30g. Add to THAT the cost of mastering prolly 2 or 3 g's. Add to that the 2- 3 thousand dollar cost to get the tape, guitar strings, drum heads, drum sticks, pick and paying guitar tech and such, add a couple more thousand for the team of techs who comes it an sets everything up the first two days. Any studio musicians or whatever are given either a flat fee of several tens of thousands, or a point or 2 depending on who they are and what they did. Add to that, living arrangements, cause bands rarely recording the in the same city they live in.

Sure sound VERY cheap to me, doesn't it to everyone else? It's a waste of money to record a band that ISN'T going to be huge for AT LEAST one album.

(Would-be philosophers who wish to argue this may suck my right nut because you'll only make asses out of yourselves.) So should we ban the gun? Ok fine. Now we've also elinated firearms for self-defense. Not mentioning that a criminal would still have a gun because they're criminals they commit crimes...now i can just take a knife and kill someone...this time did the knife commit the crime of murder? How about the manufacturer? Obviously, no. But let's ban them anyhow...well you're going to have a hard time killing someone with a knife now (not really...criminals wills till have them...cause they are criminals!) But you'll also have a hard time with buttering bread, cutting steak...GETTING steaks. Now well I'll just kill someone with a rope...when that's banned i'll use a rock, then my hands. Do you see the point? The tool is just a tool it can be used for good or for bad, it's the person that chooses.

Ok first off the quality of a 44.1khz 128kbps mp3 is the same as a cd. It only takes up HD space if you leave it ona cd. Being most people these days have a zip drive, superdisk or a cd burner (most people i know anyhow.) That elimnates that question. Now, since when did i say sell a whole cds, i just said the tracks you want. You want all the songs go to frigen borders or best-buy or where ever you buy your cds and buy it. i think Courtney Love however, has the best solution to all of this...just say fsck major-labels.

Actually, you don't know that. Constitutionally it shouldn't be outlawed. It does not violate anyone's right to life liberty or pursuit of happiness and therefore it would be unconstitutional. What people use it for however can do those things. You can ban the tool, but people are just going to make another one.

To be honest napster should simply be a wake-up call to the recording industry. We live in a capitalist society (supposedly anyhow...) where the economy is supposed to be consumer driven. If you method of doing anything with a product or if the product falls behind the times then guess what...you lose. The recording industry would make alot more money if they would sells whole CDs and single downloadable tracks...there are manybands/albums i only like one song off of and don't wish to waste $15 for one song! However $1.50 billed to my credit or debit card...sure thing...set me up a user name and account so that if my HD crashes or whatever i dont have to pay again. That alone would generate a whole lot of $$$.

Again, you don't ban the tool, you ban the trade and the trade has been banned.
