Dear Editor, Jane Dark does not get it. I guess she is just too caught up in the oppressed being non-white females, to see anything else. The type of abuse that the/. stories refered to was not just 'normal' horseplay. But Janes' racist and sexist attitudes have blinded her. There is a BIG difference between periodic teasing and incessant insistent ridicual, that is often acompanied with physical attack. This is what some kids go through at school. We are not talking about home-lonely Friday nights, but spit-target Tuesday mornings and black-eyed Thursday afternoons. The demographics of the stories in/. will track the demographics of the readers of/., wow what a concept! The High School I attended, was about one half "hispanic". I am "white". I had four friends. Three were "hispanic". We were all nerds. We all suffered constant humiliation. The reason; we were more interesting in things like high energy physics, Star Trek, and computers ( in 1975, computers were very weird ), then football, sitcoms, and "who is doing who". Half our most ardent opressors were hispanic. Being different is the reason for oppression, not race. Race is only one point of difference. There are many. And as far as sex, I guess Ms. Dark skipped all the responces by lady geeks. After reading those, I finally found out why the smart girls in grade school, that I liked so much, suddenly turned so dumb in high school. I thought it was hormones. Now I know. They sent their minds into hiding! How terrible. I guess not all do. It seams that those who stay geeks have a harder time then the guys. And.... ( White_Male != Middle_class) && ( Suburban != well_off ). It is ironic that the author is relying on stereotypes to support an otherwise untenable possition! I think she is just resentfull of anything that takes glory from her pet cause. Maybe she is just so bitter from looking at things through her distorted world view for so long, that she thinks it is okay for white male boys to have to endure daily abuse and humiliation.
P.S. On a side note: I live in an area that looks idealic. It is in the hart of Sonoma Valley. The kids there are a mess. Most are from broken homes, with parents that are addicts. Just because someone is a white male, and not living in an urban slum, does not mean that they are Wally Cleaver. Poverty does not respect borders or race. Poverty is the worst oppresser of all.
P.P.S. Jane Dark, learn to write! I thought I rambled.
You know no history. Its not about a net connection, ye of little vision. Its about information warfar, all satcoms are off. Information warfar is ONLY used to make murder easier. So get a brain and shut up.
There seems to be alot of misunderstanding about Motorolas structur. The organization that produces the CPUs and MPUs is not part of SPS, let alone SPG. SPG is Motorolas jelly bean factory. They make the cheap commodity parts. Much of what SPS, the larger organization that SPG belongs to, does is custom. Look at your hard drive. There is a good chance that there is a fairly large LSI flatpack with the batwing logo. Commodity parts just clog up the fabs. Other companies are better suited to cranking out standard TTL and CMOS, etc. As far as anolog ICs, most of the good stuff is made by a different organization within SPS. SPS is still a huge part of Motorola.
I spent 10 years with the company and enjoyed every one.
Couldn't/. come up with a decent "Batwing"?

I am still bitter over ZDs coverage of OS/2. Talk about some slanted studies! I do not upgrade my hardware that often. When I get ready to do so, a lot has changed so I start with some research. The last time was in early 1997. I used PC Mag. Vol.15 No.16 (Sep 24 1996) for there Pentium Pro review. I crunched the data that they provided and guess what? It did NOT match the text of their reviews.
While in H.S. 22 years ago, I read alot. Science fiction and Ayn Rand. I never totaly bought into Objectivism, but it sure gave me something to think about. Her writings helped develop in me ideas that allowed me to servive the torment.
I had planed on bringing her up in another post but never got to it. I guess I should not be suprised that someone else did.
BTW, if you think being a computer nerd is strange now, I was one in 1975, befor the Apple II. There were maybe five of us who could really program, out of a couple thousand.
UM, We are talking about Teenagers here. Remember. Teens are in between thinking only from their perspective to thinking about other perspectives. They are just starting to develope the social skills to communicate. What you so easily recommend probably took you awhile to learn.

His real Dad is a meth addict. He has been abused. At times he can be a real hand full, but I always treat him with respect. I let him know that his feeling and opinions matter. He always responds with respect. He has never been a "discipline problem". He is open with me and receptive to what I have to say.
Besides being a real pain at times, he also has been a real blessing. All it took was respect.
My Freshman year was at a Jesuit High School. One of the manditory classes was concerned with spiritual matters. The class was designed to be useful for all faiths (non-catholics and non- Chritians were also students). It opened my eyes to see other things besides math and science.
The public school system can not teach spitituality. This is a shame because It was my growing interest that gave me the tools I needed to deal with my opressors. When I was in HS, my few friends and I could have been destroyed by the "system" or we could have tried to strike back. Instead we saw things in a different light. We found constructive outlets for our frustrations.
If those young men in Colorado understood Why there is a difference between right and wrong, We would not be writing these comments today.
On a diffrent track: One of the other things that helped me survive High School, were a couple of gifted teachers. They showed me that it was OK for me to be who I am.
