  1. Re:C'mon - Isn't this really about the War on Open Source Code And War · · Score: 1

Questions of the merits of a war aside :

There are too many lies, too much emotive language and too much unilateralism for me to be comfortable with the US position.

There are two issues : merits of war and the attitude/method employed by the US.

Most people agree that Hussein is a big problem and needs to be dealt with in some way, but the way the current US administration is dealing with this gives me a bad bad feeling.

If anyone reads this could you spare a mod point?

The development team didn't want this announced yet because there are still some major bugs/omissions in the alpha. The intro animations are not there yet, the game is a bit unstable (especially during dialog which has lots of colour/pallete action eg. starbase when power is low at the beginning, sylandro homeworld), the collision detection is only implemented as bounding box at the moment which has some nasty sideeffects (one of which makes it impossible to win the final battle unless you play as "cyborg").

Having said this I've played it through to the end again, so it's definately possible. Just save often.

Also, if there are any new potential players out there, this game takes major time to complete and is a huge challenge compared to many games. I'd imagine it would be almost impossible to get anywhere without any background/instructions, so I suggest you CHEAT. Yes, search the net, find a walkthrough... this game will not leave you feeling empty as it will be challenging enough to complete even if you know what you're supposed to be doing. The walkthroughs will probably seem cryptic anyway until you discover the intricacies of the story along the way. Playing it through again I shamelessly downloaded cheats and maps because although I love the game it would simply take too long to rediscover, and I don't have the time.

For potential new players I stress again : If you don't mind a challenge and enjoy humour in what you play this game is worth it...

Yes, the music blew everything else away at the time. Interesting trivia : Paul Reiche III (SC2 game designer) actually announced a music competition on Usenet in 1992 to get music for the game. See Google for an archive of the original message... $50 bucks each for the winners... hmmmm.

Also for those role players out there Paul Reiche III did a stint at TSR and amongst other contributions was the inventor of the Thyr-Kreen insectoid creatures for AD&D. See the Toys for Bob Bio for more info.

  4. Trawlers on NE Coast (Oz) on Computers That Thrive in Salty, Humid Environments? · · Score: 1

A couple of the techs here have maintained computer systems for trawlers, and apparently it was cheaper to replace a PC than to initially buy a system hardened against the elements. (Keep in mind we're on the Great Barrier Reef and a lot of the water is sheltered).

A HCI idea I've been excited about for a long time is a "general interface spec"... ie. a general way to link an application to any number of interfaces.

    Just think :
    * You'd be able to twiddle kernel compile options on your interface of choice.
    * Applications suddenly become automatically accessible to the disabled.
    * Translation could be switched on (just in case the application doesn't support a particular language).
    * Interface development could SPEED ahead if a suite of decent programs are already developed.
    * Users can make choices about the bleeding-edge interfaces they use without worrying about supported applications.
    * Application developers don't have to port their wares to new interfaces.
    * From a Unix philosophy standpoint it just seems "right"... abstracting away the interface gives you a smaller more general tool.

I've done lots of seaching for an implimentation of this idea, and probably the closest is in XML (can't remember the name unfortunately) but it's a bit limited both in functionality and available platforms.

  7. We've seen this before... on Mindcraft Posts Linux Hate Mail · · Score: 1

Mindcraft carefully selecting their data to prove a point? I'm shocked.

I'd like to see a respected Linux community member post their share of Microsoft advocating rants they've seen/received, and then calmly explain the unique dynamics of online discussion (nay, the tradition) for the casual reader.

I'm not advocating noise, but its just sad to see them parade this (unpleasant, granted) behaviour as Linux specific.

Perhaps, though, the fact that Linux is truly owned by its community makes them more predisposed to this sort of behaviour, although OS discussion in general seems to be traditionally religious.
