Some of the all-nighters I've pulled have been because the job wouldn't get done otherwise in time for shipping deadlines. Worst thing I did was to let my attitude slide into the abyss from observing how often I was simply fixing other people's screw-ups...
I'm 38 now and can't pull those all-nighters very well anymore!-)
One of the frequently touted selling points about Linux is its ability to perform well with older hardware -- and the caveat "except for resource-intensive apps" is left as an unspoken assumption.
I have performance problems with E if I'm using a GTK pixmap theme on my P-II 350 w/ Matrox G200 (and lots of RAM). I get far better performance even on my older P166 if I stick with a GTK plain theme (but there are likely usability problems on systems much slower than P166 - dunno, I haven't tried.)
With all the hype about Linux not requiring state-of-the-art hardware, it only makes sense to ship a window manager suitable for low-end systems (but don't leave out those wanting the immersive experience of, say, E, and who have the hardware to support it).
Besides, RH6 ships with E 0.15. How many 0.15 software versions are there which work nearly as well?
1. They can get more $$, therefore they will. A ubiquitous feature of free markets.
2. Think of it as $/MIP (substitute desired measure of "computing power"), computed as an average over the entire wafer. Chips from the wafer testing OK at higher speeds will naturally cost more.
Yes, another "me too"... but nowhere does it say it WILL get better!
Alienation and emotional cruelty started well before middle school; continued on through high school AND onward through college, which I finally dropped out of. Being told it's all because of jealousy of my higher intelligence didn't help.
For some of us, there is NO support from family, the few friends we manage to make through the years, there were NO caring and empathetic teachers, and by the time there was any chance at all of turning it around I was far too gone. 20 years later, with a lot of help I am finally trying to put myself together...
I see many of the same behavior patterns in most "adults", and the very class of people at whose hands I suffered from childhood on are occupying many of the decision-making positions in the business world where glitz, surface appearances and "oooh, how cool!" carry far more weight than demonstrable correctness. I'm an engineer and spend the vast majority of my time cleaning up the "virtual garbage" left by incompetent fools...
I'm tired of hearing "it's human nature". We CREATE human nature, each and every one of us, with every single interaction we have with each other.
It was mentioned elsewhere here to just "drop out". Ayn Rand wrote of this idea on a much larger scale in "Atlas Shrugged". Maybe it's time.
Violence isn't the answer, though; it only makes things worse...

Two perspectives:
