  1. Obviously satire on Apple Deals with Devil, Communists · · Score: 1

From the 'anti' link to another parody site, to the tech-savvy humor (e.g. chmod 666) it is clear that this site is a clever work of satire. The designer is probably a Christian or at least very familiar with Christian doctrine (i.e. Bible major or Seminary student) who wished to point out some of the absurdities of some of the "Christian" sub-cultures out there. "Fellowship University" does not show up in a Google query. I am sure a little more research by the poster and/or editors would have discovered the true nature of the site. I would dig up more proofs of its satirical nature but Google's cache is too slow at the moment.

  2. for every shareware there is an equal freeware... on Do You Pay for Your Shareware? · · Score: 2, Insightful

At least that's what I've found to be true. If I can get all the software I want in freeware versions, why pay for a shareware version? Sometimes it takes some searching to find a great freeware product, but it is always more satisfying to me to find something free and usefull rather than simply shelling out for the ubiquitous version that does the same thing (although sometimes is actually inferior). When I install a new Windows OS for someone, I always download Filzip for them, rather than Winzip with its anoying nag screen. I also try to teach people about the Gimp and they are always amazed that they can have a Photoshop equivalent for free.
Also, the great HTML-Kit, VirtualDub, Blender, and many others are great, professional apps that happen to be free.
You can even run a portal like Slashdot on freeware (using Slash or MaxWebPortal).

More patched IE 6.0 security holes are available here and a further demonstration of the GetObject() vulnerability is available here.

When a hole is discovered on a new piece of software and the patch hasn't been released yet, should we abandon the product until it's fixed? What if your corporation runs ASP, MSSQL, and IIS and a flaw is discovered; should you switch to PHP, MySQL, and Apache? Imagine how much time and money that would cost.

  4. How about the HCL? on Michael Robertson Interview about Lindows · · Score: 1

Will Lindows have a Hardware Compatibility List at least comparable to Linux's and Windows'? I am so unimpressed by MS's lack of support for certain hardware in Windows 2000--why should I risk more of my hardware getting left in the cold by a new OS?

I have heard some great suggestions for those that can host their own site/app/db on multiple firewalled boxes. What about when you are in charge of everthing, including security, for a small site that can't afford to hire a consultant, let alone additional staff?
The owner thinks everything is fine because he pays for a security certificate and everyone sees a lock at the bottom of the screen. But that just fools consumers into an unmerited sense of security because at the back-end, plaintext cc #s are sent by a form-to-email CGI.
Is it the admin's responsibility to fix what the boss is unwilling to pay for? Or should you do the best you can with the resources available to you on your own time?
I know this is not an ideal work situation, but it's one that exists in the real world. If you're an amateur, but you're the only amateur they've got, shouldn't you at least try your best to do things right?

My question is where is the best place to buy the hardware you're giving away? I know there are wholesalers and ebay online, but they charge for shipping which is often more than the worth of the parts.

Are there local pickup places to buy or take away antique hardware? Nothing in this network is higher than a PII, and I'm looking for a few 486's.

If you had a high-end server and a 486 terminal, could you view a DivX movie on the 486? And could you hear MP3s on the 486's speakers? I know most 486's can barely handle MP3, let alone video files. And if the content of a streaming video or audio format was sent over the network, wouldn't that require huge bandwidth? I guess I'm trying to discern what would be the major bottlenecks here.

Isn't all property, then, an "artificial construct"? And if so do you mind if I take your house, car, and computer? You have no natural right to your property, only an artificial one imposed by our society.

You are speaking of an ideal society. We, unfortunately, live in a real one. A real one in which, incidentally, Shakespeare would be allowed to create his works under the Constitutional protection which limits the time for which an author is granted exclusive right. Also, his plays did not use a substatial portion of the originals, nor did they influence the market value of any works that he borrowed from. That is why we can have spin-off shows on TV like "The Weakest Link", which clearly owes its origin to the popularity of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and countless other dramatized game shows. We also have spin-off books, teenage boy-bands, parodies, and many other types of free exchange of ideas. Copyright laws are meant to protect authors, not hinder freedom of expression or the free interchange of ideas.

You are missing the point about ROMs. They are not "intellectual" property, because they can be easily reproduced without any real intellectual genius. They are games that people like, and for nostalgia sometimes like to play in their original forms. How many freeware versions of "Asteroids" are there? If people want to be entertained, they should look for those freely available games, or cheap games they can afford. Why bother doing something illegal when there are so many fun games to be had freely?

  12. Re:"Diogenes"? Hah. on MAME on X-Box · · Score: 1
When I say that doing something illegal is cheating, I am speaking for the vast majority of cases, but not to each specific case. Teaching blacks in the South was illegal but moral, so I do not consider that cheating. Doing something that is both illegal and immoral (i.e. benefiting illegally from other people's labor--defeating the system by enjoying someone's intellectual labor without giving them their proper respect or financial contribution) is certainly dishonest.

Let me illustrate with an example. My father spent many months of his life and took time away from his family to write a reference book. This was on top of his regular, full-time job and yet the book has only generated a small fraction of the income that he is capable of earning as a contractor. Would it be honest if people took his book and copied it instead of paying for it? If enough people did this, even if most were not going to buy it anyway, what incentive would my father have to ever write another reference?

  13. Re:"Diogenes"? Hah. on MAME on X-Box · · Score: 1

Doing something illegal equals cheating. Cheating is dishonest. Therefore, anyone who uses copyrighted material illegally is being dishonest. The only excuse for doing this would be to find a legal way to use the ROMs, like, obtaining the copyright-holder's permission, or, using it for an educational purpose. Just downloading the games for recreation, even if it deprives no one of any property is still illegal and those who should seek integrity will avoid it.

  14. Why do so many people want MAME, do they own ROMs? on MAME on X-Box · · Score: 1

Does anyone actually own any arcade ROMs for legal use with MAME? If not, getting the emulator to work for whatever platform is a moot point. Please don't tell me it's ok because everyone's doing it; just tell me why the fuss over something only a few people can stand up and claim to be doing fully within his or her legal rights. Are the games so much fun that they make it worthwhile to become a dishonest person? I doubt it--there are many freely available games of similar or higher quality.

I am EXTREMELY purturbed by those who try to inflict their own warped views upon the rest of us. Get a life. We all have a differently warped view. Yours is no better.

So if no view is superior, than how am I to trust your view that everyone has their own warped view? Wouldn't it take a kind of a faith to trust your words over, say, those of the gospels? And which voice has been around longer, provided more spiritual sustenance, or been that which has made life possible for the most people throughout the ages? Yours is a lone voice amongst many; why should I trust it? Under whose authority should I trust you? Give me examples from history as to why your life-view is more relevant, beneficial, and true than the life-view of those who have held the spiritual life-view, such as one Jesus of Nazareth.
