I'm not an SA subscriber, but after seeing the politicization of anti-science that has happened over the past 7 years, it is not surprising to see a pro-science rag take a stand against that.
Also, it is not surprising to hear some people (ahem) claiming that calling for a grand solar plan is "political". Scientists would say that it is (may be) good public policy, based on the scientific awareness that continuing generation of CO2 will spell big problems for our civilization.
And well, if that ends up being a stand against the viewpoints of certain pro-oil industry, anti-science, global warming denyers (such as our current administration), then so much the better for science!
I dont know what mac world you live in, but for me, office on my OSX box has been slow, bloated, and buggy (crashing every other time I use it). It has basically driven me to use NeoOffice which (while based on OpenOffice 1.1.4) is not much slower or bloated, but crashes less.
That is absolutely not true. If you think it is, you are reading the wrong bloggers. These days, to me it seems that most of the "mainstream media" news gets their news from bloggers who do real investigative reporting. Mainstream journalists don't do real investigating anymore.
but I had decided the same thing last month. My time is (now) too valuable to spend hours each week trying to get my Linux setup to be "perfect". Or maybe I just don't care anymore... I just want it to work.
I don't see why everyone thinks it's so noteworthy that Hawking admitted he's wrong. That's the way most people should behave. That's the way most respected scientists behave. Unfortunately that's exactly the opposite of the way our current preeminant politicians behave.
Subaru is *not* the biggest telescope, not even close -- it is only 4m in diameter vs. the two Keck telescopes' 10m. (and many other telescopes 6m and 8m). It is just able to take really wide-field images.
Isn't this the same kind of propulsion used by that experimental "deep space" probe that NASA launched last year? I sort of remember something going wrong with it...
The main source of revenue will probably be "fulfillment", or all the different ways you can turn your images from bits into physical objects. The coolest I've heard of is picture cookies (that's the kind you eat).
We saw it on the news last night (and I live in Seattle)... the ones breaking windows and destroying stuff were there because "it was a riot, dude, so I wanted to go there and be cool too...and like... what's the WTO?" I don't think I have ever supported the police before but this time they were justified. Its just too bad that the peaceful demonstrators got caught in the middle, but they were what made it all possible. Just my ramblings...

Microsoft releases another malicious piece of software.
This would be a perfect example of a potential thunderbird extension. Is anyone working on this?
Have to say it -- has anyone else noticed that all the spammers (in the US, at least) are from red states?

There is a big difference.
