Second that nuff said. If you computer/math/science geeks weren't so damaged, you'd be giving a lot more back than you do. The weenies making more money than God in the Silicon Valleys of the world keep it all to themselves. Prima facie evidence: Bill Gates.
News report ominously mentioned that kid was wearing a "blue trenchcoat". Puh-lease.
Why couldn't the Colorado kids have worn those MC Hammer plaid pants that I keep seeing on guys who have no clue? I could live without ever encoucntering a pair of those fashion disasters again.
I've had more than my share of grown up geeks throw their supposed weight around me. Just because you boss around a bunch of computer geeks doesn't mean I have to listen to your blather outside of your workplace. I think some of you are just so delighted that you've finally found an audience for your supposed knowledge. Listen up: many of us are not impressed with your world view. Many of you are far more obnoxious than even the dumbest jock because of sense of self-importance. Just because you can use a computer. Who died and made you kings?
My son is a jock, sort of. He plays basketball, has been since he was 2. Currently in 9th grade and a starter on the JV bball squad.
He is not stupid, violent, intolerant(in fact, he's very empathetic, very sensitive), and an outspoken non-comformist. Most of his friends participate in organized sports. Only one thinks he's the next great white wonder of the NBA. Everybody else has a good time. They listen to hip hop, play video games, hang at the mall, irritate their parents, get in trouble once in a while, get grounded, are frequesntly happy, and sometimes infuriated.
They seem to have full lives. And they get help from us, their parents, grandparents, adult friends, older sibs, and some teachers.
From what I've read, and, to be honest, just looking at their pictures, these kids didn't fit the definition. They felt different (I think) or maybe decided that being different, very different, was a great way to get attention. Yeah, that's what I think. Eric wanted to make his mark and chose the violence as a distinguishing feature.
Seems to me that a couple of the kids killed were much closer to the geek definition.
When I was in hs. hundreds of yrs. ago (OK-late 60s), teachers and administrators almost always used their own judgement. Sometimes they were wrong, very wrong, but I don't remember anyone being highly arbitrary. You could argue yr. case with the principal, or the ass't princ. or the teacher. Mostly everyone used common sense.
My son's English teacher used common sense last week when she quietly and privately asked one of her students to ditch his black trench (which he has worn 24/7/365 since 7th grade) for a while. He didn't agree with her but since he respected her, he stashed the coat in his locker.
See--treat someone as a human being and you might get results.
Ban coats, music, computers, TV, rant and rave on the Senate floor, blabblabblab your stupid opinion on the news. It's just business as usual--the war against teenagers. Nothing new under the sun.

Thank you.
