The best lesson to be learned about this exercise is that we all benefit from the showdown between NT and Linux. Regardless of who "wins" the benchmark tests, we can quickly pinpoint the weaknesses of each os and fix them. Even NT users will benefit, if MS can react in a timely fashion. This is clear support for the DOJ's case against MS, and support for open source development. I'm looking forward to the next showdown- bring 'em on!
I concur with everyone else who doesn't like that cellular lifeform crap. I always preferred the mystical side of the Force, and now George abandons all the Eastern Mysticism for a standard Scientific explanation for the force, and a decidedly Western Messiah story. Who wants to bet that Anakin Skywalker will return in episode 2 as an impatient (and hotter than Hamill-looking) adolescent bent on freeing Tatooine's slaves. My god, could George be any more obvious?
Jon, I appreciate what you're trying to do here, I really do- after all, you're trying to give people a voice, and that's what the net is all about. I think it's remarkable that so many of us connect with the Littleton shootings in such a personal way. I know I do. Even at the age of 25, and in spite of having had a reasonably good time in high school, I can identify in the same way- that nobody was bothering to listen, and that nobody really cared.
To me, those are the real issues, and we need to start moving on them. It's important that we talk, and it's important that we respond. Our (including both your American, and my Canadian) dog-eat-dog societies are unravelling at the seams, and it's time to take the time to listen to each other, and to validate each others' experiences.
We live in a world where empathy is in short supply, and the dominant messages of our time are driven by the bottom line, as opposed to human need. I hope we can learn to start caring for one another.
Granted, defacto standards are often not optimal, but we've got to choose between several evils- defacto standards, proprietary standards, and standards set by committee, all of which have their own serious shortcomings.
I don't buy the argument that we should dislike Redhat for charging for their software. The GPL explicitly encourages the sale of the code, and if you really don't like it, just do what I do and download and burn your own CD for free.

Jon Katz reviewed The Meme Machine, not the Selfish Meme (or Gene, or whatever), as your review box suggests.

19000 c/c++ code for my Master's thesis.
+another 3600 lines of latex code for the document itself. Does anyone know if latex is Turing complete?
