    Having been through that particular grinder, the important thing to remember is that, no matter what the other parent says, the kids will eventually figure out who the real asshole is.

    Problem is, usually both parents are too insecure to take the long view. They don't trust their kids to be intelligent enough to figure things out for themselves, so they do stupid things. Then they wonder why the kids believe they might really be assholes ...

    He could have walked away. In fact, Nina HAD walked out, with the kids, so it was OVER. Hans is obviously the type of guy who takes that personally - as in "How day she - I'll kill the bitch" - and he did it.

    Again, no excuse. Just like there are women who can't accept it when the guy walks away - it's not an excuse to go and kill them.

    These are people who can't accept that the other person has moved on.

    Search the previous stories. A lot of posters jumped on me because I said he was going to be found guilty, despite the fact that, unlike them, I *have* served as a juror in a murder trial.

    not I nor you nor anyone else know what Nina did to make him kill her.

    Unless she was pointing a gun at him and it was self-defense, there is *no* excuse.

    If a woman makes you angry, are you going to hit her?

    If she cheats on you, are you going to kill her?

    Will you give her the same rights in return? How about if she just cuts your pecker off instead and feeds it to the dog?

    How about if it's your kids? If they don't listen to you, are you going to wack them to "teach them a lesson"?

    It's called murder because it wasn't justified. Blaming the victim is just fucked up.

    None of that justifies killing her. Only someone with an over-inflated ego would think otherwise.

    Also, she had gone out and gotten herself a decent job to support herself and their children. Sounds like a responsible mother to most of us.

    Plus in the end, his filesystem ends up a dead end because it's now unsupported.

    His actions in court made it pretty obvious what he thought of the jurors.

    Try sitting as a juror on a murder trial - it's quite an experience, not at all like on TV.

    The man believed he could con everyone. He forgot that even the most brilliant people make mistakes, as well as that his own perspective may be untrustworthy.

    Of course, when you're so full of yourself as he was, it makes it easier to "justify" killing someone else, since they aren't as "worthy" as you are.

    Some people have said he's disturbed. No - he's just a conceited scumbag who has no empathy for others, and let his ego get the better of him, a la OJ Simpson.

    We all benefit from someone's loss all the time. If people never died, we'd all be starving, etc. Can you imagine having your overly-senile great-great-great-20-times-removed ancestors hanging around - and ALL their offspring - you'd want to kill them, just to get some breathing room.

    Hate to say it, but the Lion King was right with that "Circle of Life" bit.

    Oh, come off it ... there was no reasonable doubt. Doubt that isn't reasonable isn't sufficient to let him walk, and the *jury* - not the prosecutor - got it right.

    Bottom lne: Hans tried to bullshit them, and they saw through it. If he had shut his moutn, maybe he would have walked, but he thought he could "put one over" on a bunch of "dumb jurors."

    He forgot that jurors don't have to be smarter than the accused - in his case, all they needed was a baloney-meter.

    Sheeh - read what I've written. I've never said that people can't practice their own religion in private ... just that they do NOT have the right to impose their beliefs on others. Abortion is a good example of that - xians are always going around sticking their nose in other people's business, but sure as hell don't like it when others disagree with THEIR beliefs, and their right to impose them on society at large.

    Nobody's saying xians have to get an abortion - but a lot of them are hypocritical assholes who get one, and rationalize it ("This was an exception - god will forgive me.") while still throwing rocks at everyone else. Same thing with the closet gays in the fundies.

    And yes, delusions and superstition (which is what we're talking about when we talk about religion) are curable by knowledge.

    Homosexuality and lesbianism, on the other hand, don't need a "cure" - they're part and parcel of the normal human experience, same as they are for many other animals.

    Actually, the honour of the first printed scrolls goes to the Chinese. Examples of scrolls printed using movable type (wood cuts of chinese ideographs) date to the 600's. the oldest know book is also Chinese, from 868.

    They also invented toilet paper 1500 years ago ...

    It's a mental disease. It contains all the manifestations of a psychosis, or "loss of contact with reality." It's sufferers indeed have delusional beliefs, and we've all known people who suddenly comes down with a case of religion and show significant personality changes, as well as impairment in their getting along with others ("self-righteous prigs with broomsticks up their arses" is just one way of describing it).

    It *can* be cured, and there are plenty of examples of atheists who used to be "true believers". The usual cure involves a healthy dose of cynicism, mixed with reality and disillusionment.

    "Intolerance and hatred" ... religious fuckwads keep claiming that things like homosexuality, which is common among mammals, can be "cured". Talk about not just intolerance, but outright ignorance.

    Fortunately, religion CAN be cured - there are plenty of atheists who can attest to it. If you're offended, tough shit -you guys started all this nonsense. Look throughout history - where there's war, there's religion, either profiting from it, or instigating it in the first place.

    It *is* a question of being practical. There are two trends at work here - open-source projects are growing in both scope and numbers, and as more coders go into retirement, they're going to have time to "scratch their itch" - F/LOSS projects will welcome them, closed-source projects will be off-limits.

    ... the install on this particular box is almost a year old. No config files have been manually edited since the actual install.

    How many "Joe schmo" users would know what to do if X randomly crashed (which it does)?

    X hasn't crashed on this box (dual monitor setup). However, what alternatives do Windows users have when their display crashes? None. They have to reboot. *nix users can always just try to restart the X server,

    Just look at the erpackaging of crap loans and blessing them with AAA ratings, and the proposal to bail out those who participated in the scam.

    Time was, the three biggest lies were "The check is in the mail", "I'll still love you in the morning", and "I won't come in your mouth."

    Now its "Mission Accomplished!", "Housing prices never go down," and "Jebus loves you- gimme money!"

    As much as I love my Debian installation, I'm the first to admit that its not ready for "schools, hospitals, and governments." I'm thinking back to high school... the librarians had enough trouble using computers as it is--imagine how much money the school system would have to pay to teach not only the librarians, but the teachers, how to use a Linux system.

    Windows is not ready for "schools, hospitals and governments".

    Keep in mind that the majority of these people know how to use the internet and office, and not much more.

    So a linux or *bsd box preconfigured is much better for their needs than a windows box.

    And once again, you're confusing the MICROSOFT corporation with the GATES FOUNDATION. Gates Foundation isn't selling an operating system.

    The Gates Foundation is there to give good PR to Microsoft - they're always around when Microsoft is trying to land a contract in the 3rd world... In doing so, it supports Microsoft's share price, This keeps Billy-boy in his billions.

    There's no confusion - giving money to a charitable org that he controls, that indirectly makes Microsoft look good, is a cheap hedge contract on the MS shares he owns.

    The Foundation is focused on garnering goodwill so that Gate's shares in Microsoft don't tank.

    And the OLPC and similar efforts are hurting Microsoft.

    20 years from now, closed source software will be dead.
