  1. Re:Something that isn't pointed out enough on SuSE 7.3 vs XP · · Score: 0, Offtopic

I have to agree. Microsoft recommends a machine equipped with at least 800Mhz and 256MB RAM just to run the OS! How in the world can an OS need that much power? Its rediculous and that alone is the reason I will not even try XP.

A little off topic but another product Microsoft makes that takes up a ton of resources is their new Visual Studio.NET and the .NET frameworks. First of all, Visual Studio is a whopping 1.6GB! I can't remember the exact numbers, but NetBeans and other similar IDE's have never needed that much disk space. The IDE consumes at least 128MB of RAM and the IIS web server with the .NET frameworks installed runs at 70MB of RAM.

  2. An excellent distributed systems book on Towards an Internet-Scale Operating System · · Score: 0

An excellent textbook I read during college was, Distributed Systems, Concepts and Design by George Coulouris, et al. This book has an excellent insight to the basic concepts of a distributed system. It gives several real-world examples, and algorithms for solving problems such as mutual exclusion, distributed deadlocking, and transaction recovery. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has none to intermediate experience in distributed systems.

  3. Plan 9 / Amoeba on Towards an Internet-Scale Operating System · · Score: 1, Informative

Has anyone heard of Plan 9 or Amoeba? Plan 9 is open source and is developed by Bell Labs (i.e., the same people who introduced Unix). Amoeba was developed by Tannenbaum. These have been around for several years and have not caught on yet. I think the reason is because there is nothing to be gained by the home user. Why would someone want people around the world using their computer when they were away? Just thinking about the security risks alone would make me skeptical.

  4. Re:for starters on What Makes a Powerful Programming Language? · · Score: 0

Too many managers force their developers to jump right into implementation. You need to take the time to design the system and develop a solution to your problem first. I read a statistic that skimming over the design phase adds 68%-150% extra time on the project before it is finished. As a programmer, I can attest to that which makes me wonder... Why do managers, project after project, keep making the same mistakes in the design phase? How many times does someone need to miss their deadlines and put unnecessary pressure on their developers before they realize where they are going wrong? Actually, from reading your question, I think the answer is simple. Marketing fluff makes upper management think developing software is as easy as drag-and-drop. They think their developers are always missing the point. They think they know more because they attended some big conference. The truth is that marketing is a major factor in bad software design.

  7. Man's Search for Himself on Browsing Alone · · Score: 1

Rollo May, author of Man's Search for Himself, offers an interesting point of view on this subject as well. Although this book was written in 1953, it still makes a powerful argument. May tries to provide advice on how to live a more meaningful life by suggesting several theories about social needs while giving a unique look within yourself. The author suggests that people who feel like they lead a meaningless life are actually finding that the social protection and structures are failing for them. As one grows older, they realize that their biggest fear is realizing how dependent they are on their parents. A natural reaction to this feeling is to throw out the social behaviors you know and adopt new ones. I haven't read this book entirely yet so I won't try to discuss any details. Maybe the Internet isn't a failing social medium but just our generation reaching out for something new.
