  1. Re:Sysadmins don't maintain code. on Playing With IT, And Why It Matters · · Score: 2

    Doesn't maintain code?
80% of my job (when I started) was writing code to maintain NT (the linux side was already taken care of).
It's not the programmer whose line lights up when a customer/employee has a problem with th program, it's mine.
I walk them through the problem and review (read LINE by LINE) the code which caused the problem, and then fix it. Or, I detail the fix, and ask the programmer to fix it... IF we are lucky it's an internal fix (config&&make&&make install), otherwise, guess who's job it is to distribute the new program to our customers AROUND THE WORLD, that's right, it's mine!
I wish I coulda' gotten hired as a programmer, but, with multiple OS/programming skills, and a lot of knowledge about security (yep, I read such greats as BUGTRAQ EVERY MORNING!) I got hired as the sys admin...
Anyway, before you decide to make us sys admins "obsolete" and have the secretary take over her job (thank the gods for that voice mail system), think about (and try learning about) what a sys admin really does (if you really wanna see a sys admin at work, try stopping by at 3 in the morning, when he's recovering the PDC and a web server, because a "programmer" like yourself {that is M$ programmer, probably VB} writes this "cool" automation program that decides to take the servers down!

  2. Where can I find a point and click gun? on Gaming Companies Being Sued Over Columbine · · Score: 1

"...two other families sent strong messages to the violence-filled media that they say made Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold more willing and efficient killers."

I can't seem to find a gun that I can point and click to shoot with, and where do you buy BFG's?
Let's try to be realistic, maybe people DO infact become de-sensitized (I think they are, to a limited degree); but desnsitization DOESN'T mean "willing" and FPS games (even the really good ones like UT or Quake (1-3) or Doom) don't help your aim, nor does learning how to shoot a mini-gun or BFG or Rail gun in an FSP make you a more "efficient" killer!
I am not saying I "condone" killing at school, I don't! Unfortunately, you push and push and push a child, any child, and they react. It IS unfortunate that these kids reacted that way. It is as tragic as those children whom are bullied to the point where they feel suicide is the "only way out".(That's why the 7-17 suicide rate is higher than the entire medical profession's suicide rate.

  3. Re:Even on Burlington Northern to Stop Gene Tests for CTS · · Score: 1

I submit that your name be placed on top of the list! If (1) I own the company or am part of the contolling board and (2) I(we) have either funded the company or gone through the trouble of getting funding for the company, I(we) have every right to every detail about anyone working for me(us). It's not a matter of "that's unfair to the employee"... it's a matter of a company running itself! Government doesn't have a right to dictate how a company handles it's policy of hiring and firing, if a person I HIRE and I PAY with MY MONEY doesn't like MY RULES (no matter how arbitrary or counterproductive those rules actually are), I should have a RIGHT to stop giving that employee MY MONEY. Stop bitching about big government/big business, until you have your own Utopian country with your own Utopian businesses...

  4. Re:What's positive about hacking? on The Happy, Benign Strivers of 2600 · · Score: 1

Maybe you should learn a little about the hacker community before blaming them for all the security problems! Ever hear of "Disgruntled Employees"? How 'bout "Script Kiddies"? These aren't part of the hacker community, these are SECURITY RISKS... as for the "Billions of dollars..." maybe you should look at the cost of your OS (and while your at it, look at the security features), stop using windows, that'd clear up half of your problems right there
