"that you understand how much fun they are having with their war on drugs"

I agree that "war on drugs" is not very likely to be ever won but there is nothing funny about it.
Drugs do cost lives and for all people like you there are even greater numbers of people who do actually support this war.
    Don't blame everything on politicians.

Wrong, at least in the case of Ensemble Studios.
I contacted them asking if there were ever plans to port AOK to Linux and their response was that
they are not porting to anything BUT they can discuss licensing the game to somebody who is willing to do so.

"it allows the maintainer of the OS to become complacent and not fix major problems. "
That is problem but not unsolvable as one can witness with popularity and steady improvements of DirectX.

"perhaps what we need are tightly controlled INTERFACES"

Yes but despite plethora of supposedly standard interfaces Unix world is still plagued by tons of incompatibilities ( Stevens books are the best example here .)

"OpenGL, OpenAL, and SDL are three such systems."

Yes, these are nice but incredible variety of Linux distributions make it hard to get even these libraries to work without first spending some time collecting prerequisites and compiling them to fit your particular distribution.
To put it bluntly, FreeBSD would be much better target here since freshly installed OS is much more predictable than your typical Linux installation.

Thanks, I will stick to BSD-style, no strings attached, real freedom license.

Frankly, for gaming you really need to have tightly controlled OS just like Windows.
It greatly simplifies life for game companies ( try asking them how did they like older DOS style times and you will see .)

I hope you do see that this sort of ideology is much closer to communism than your typical American way of life (where individual and his/her rights is what counts.)

It has nothing to do with "ideas US was founded on"

For a "free" license it sure makes you go through many hoops, checking and double checking that everything fits well into FSF mindset and their vision of what free software is about.
