So we are to give them an insecure overly-complicated OS to learn on? Why? Because everyone runs Windows and Office? What about MacOS and WordPerfect or Notes? Is there nothing if it is not a Microsoft Product? It is not about the specific product (take a look at the different iterations of Office for example), it is about generic computing skills. Once you understand the concept of how something is supposed to work, it is just a matter of learning the details, and details are trivial. And you would be surprised at the amount of contact a person must have with *nix systems in the work place, especially anything professional.

I got a Compaq LTE 53XX P133 laptop, and purchased the docking station for $50. It gives me 4 pcmcia slots, one builtin nic (and builtin scsi), 2 serial + 1 parallel ports, and one ISA slot (with a 3C515 right now). Since I just got it (and my workstation's drive just died) I haven't had the time to set it up. I have been running it 24X7 with linux installed on it for the past week though with no problems that I can tell. My plan is to set it up as the router (in case I can get DSL or Cable Modem) for my network, ppp connection to my provider, and proxy server so I don't have to download everything all over again over my 24k connection anytime I come to /.

The TurboRing is ok, but it doesn't seem to have the same fit and finish as the Expert Mouse. Also, I am having some problems adjusting to it "ergonomics" (I have been using the Expert Mouse for almost 3 years). The only reasons I upgraded is 1.> Scroll ring (D!@# MS for "inventing" the scroll wheel :) ) and 2.> my machine would have problems booting (into windows) or not find the PS/2 port (in linux).

I am looking forward to playing with the new Expert Mouse Pro USB. It should be quite interesting to use, and maybe it won't take as long to break in as the TurboRing.

Oh, and for all of those who say a trackball sucks for gaming, well, I didn't seem to have much of a problem :) PS2rate + twitchy settings on trackball means you can spin very quickly. In fact I still have problems going back to a mouse since they don't react as quickly and always seem to run off of the pad :)

Intel NIC's are not always great. EEPro 10 cards are slower than the equivalent 3Com cards (3c509) and not even as good as the NE2000 (REAL Novell, not clone). EEPro 100 cards have been getting better, but then from where they started almost anything is an improvement. The 100A are completely unsupported and if it was part of a company purchase is likely to have been replaced by Intel the first time there was a problem with it. The 100B works great for workstation use, as long as you reboot your system every week or so if you are using 100 Full Duplex. If you try to use it at 100 Full Duplex in a heavy server environment expect to reboot the server 2-3 times per week after it locks up. The 100 [C/+] has since fixed that and appears to be working quite nicely even under heavy load. I am wondering about how well the server specific model does though, especially in the 2 port version.

How about this? 3 copies: one electronic copy on the local storage of the machine, one electronic copy on removable media (1), and a paper printout with a bar code (2). The two electronic copies would be "tripwired" (md5/md2/etc) for protection from tampering. 1. The removable media (compact flash/ smart media/ etc) would be initialized by the voting officials when you present your ID (voter registration/drivers license/ etc). It would only contain a crypto signature that lets the machine know that it is the right one for that polling place. When the voter was finished and had printed out their "paper" ballot, they would put both into an envelope and deposit it in the ballot box. The paper printout would hopefully be printed on thick (recycled) paper. There would also be a bar code reader on the ballot machine so the voter could quickly double-check that the bar code printout was the same as what they had chosen before they put it into the envelope. It might also be good to have the bar code at the beginning or end of the paper and a list of everyone that was voted for by that voter (duplication of ballots and voting IS a good thing, it helps to make sure that everything can be checked 2 and 3 ways).

You might be surprised at what a 13 year old can read and understand. I read "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep" when I was 13, and although I missed some of the deeper themes it still affected how I viewed others. I have since watched the movie and re-read the book, which have provided further enlightenment on the first time I read it.
For some political/war based science fiction with dilemas regarding former military personell trying to come back into "normal" society, check out John Steakleys "Armor" or Timothy Zahn's "Cobra" series. Zahn also has written some of the best of the Star Wars books, which are suitable for all ages.

Another good series would be Frederik Pohl's "Heechee" series. These are just a couple I hadn't seen referenced yet.

Just because we may be a minority and it sounds to you like we are whining doesn't mean that we and everyone else isn't having our right to have any rights co-opted by organizations who have mass amounts of money to litigate us into hell. If this is to continue there are only two outcomes: I) a world where everything is controlled like in 1984, Brazil, or Gattaca; or II) something far worse than the French Revolution ever was. Neither is very pretty, and I wouldn't want either one to happen. Something must be done now to protect us so that the same thing doesn't happen to everyone else. If you start by taking a little bit of freedom/rights away from one minority "for the good of society", then it becomes that much easier to take some more from another one until you are also doing it to the majority.
