I never send bills through the mail. I use a thing called a 'phone' or another new thing called 'the internet'. Sure the post office is great but it is unrealistic to think that 'our democracy would be unliveable' without it.
How can you possibly accept this as fact so easily. They might have no 'knowledge' but intelligence is another story altogether. It is an interesting point to ponder, but no where near a certainty. Think, then post.
I think I have to go with the 'Fuck You' guy. He was incredibly persuasive. He has very eloquently elevated an interesting debate into a sublime moment. Also he is probably mentally defective to such an extent that we should applaud his mere ability to use a computer regardless of content.
You can become an ordained minister in 5 mins. Try this out. I did it! I now walk around secretly marrying people. Now, if only I could become a sea captain online, I could also marry people at sea!
Following this logic to it's conclusion, we should never send a manned mission. It will always be cheaper 10-20 years in the future. Are you still using your IBM PC jr. circa 1985?
This should be modded up, except for the obvious child cruelty he wants to practice. I mean, really! Exposing a child to the half-assed, no thought, troll-infested waters of slashdot? Do you understand the damage you can do to a developing mind? Curse you, you fiend!
I completely agree with you. It seems that people have come to expect everything to be free for some reason. Don't want to look at the banner ads? Don't go to the site.
It really is that simple.
Do you want ALL sites to be 'Register to look at ANY content'? I don't. Because that is next if banners don't work. You think they can track our habits now? Wait till you HAVE to register. There is no free lunch. If you value the site, look at the ads and occaisonaly click on one or two.
Or you could complain and scam your way out of the ads and then bitch when the site folds. That is VERY productive.
The thing about this scheme is that it just takes one person to register, download the mp3's, and p2p them and poof this 'copy protection' goes away. New releases are frequently seeded from a single rip, so this is entirely possible.
Look idiot, I have a little trackball (which has 2 buttons) that I use with my G3 powerbook. I can use it on any surface. It is especially good for the plane because I don't have to hunch over the tray table...
Within minutes after the crash the media machinery puts the video images in an infinite loop feeding them to their public, of course commercial breaks are inserted at regular intervals and CNN is likely to make significant profits in the next few weeks.
In fact the networks were losing somewhere in the neighborhood of US$40 Million EACH
What I would like to see are 'team games, where you could bring a bunch of friends and play as members of the same team. I think soccer would be especially good for this...
I think what we need for the home user is 'service aware' applications. For instance, when you launch an ftp client it enables the service, then, when you quit the app the service is disabled. This would limit your exposure to only the time necessary to do what you have to do.
Did you even read the article? Why do you think in such black and white terms? Here is the ideal situation: No warehousing, no distribution (save electronically), no wastage. Print enough copies to stock 1xAs many bookstores as you have. If a copy is *hot* then you have the staff make up 50 first thing in the morning (based on the previous days sales perhaps. What this machine gives a retailer is TOTAL flexability. As far as the covers selling the books, well you still can go and browse the covers the same as before... And if there is still a market for the must have Hardback book people, well let them PAY for it. I read 2-3 books a week, so I can only afford paperbacks, and the article says that paperbacks could DECREASE in price by 20%. Throw in a way to trade them in for a discount on your next book and I would be in heaven! You would'nt recognize revolutionary if Paul Revere bit you on the ass.
Yeah, this is already being done. Most notably by David Bowie. He issued 'stock' in David Bowie to raise money top record a new album with each stock owner get a share of the proceeds...
Do you have a source on that? I fly a lot and I have yet to see a seat with power. Luckily my Powerbook lasts for the whole flight usually.

What can we do by inspecting the rocks in person we can't do remotely?
We can kick major martian butt when things go horribly wrong. What are rock-picking robots gonna do then huh?
Unless we are sending super-intelligent-killbots!
8 GB's? You sir, are an amateur. They are obviously not .shns either...
There is nothing wrong with 'Cascading Style Sheets' I use em all the time... (Although I don't know what programmers have to do with them.)

I don't think anyone else has mentioned this but, the lameness filter sucks major ass.
Shouldn't that be /usr error?
If you are gonna be sarcastic, you should at least be funny too.

Is it really that hard to do a quick search before you make an idiot of yourself?

What almost everyone seems to be missing is that you need to enable javascript. That plus 128 encrypt gets you in.
But you would think that (given the advice the psychic friends gave) they could look forward to you solving it and just tell you what you found...
For this to really be usefull, we would need brain transplant technology. Which is more frightening then cloning IMHO.
