  1. Force use of proxy server on Handling Viruses in an Uncontrolled Network? · · Score: 1

There are many insightful answers below but I feel most of them are saying how they can protect a network which is already clean. But in your situation this is not the case; you need to make all the students clean up their own trash.

    What I suggest is this:

    1) If you already have a proxy server, move on to step 3)

    2) Send out flyers stating that in X weeks the network will no longer accept direct web connections to the internet. Instead they need to connect through a proxy server. Include information how to configure their web browsers.

    3) On Day 1 of using the proxy, force every student to log on and fill out some identifying information and download a virus scanner / cleaner. When they have an electronic evidence that the computer is clean (I'm sure some programs offer this) they will be issued a username/password combo for later logins.

A simple setup will not fix problems viruses spreading through other means (mail, ftp, etc.) and may be easy to bypass for the computer savvy, but most likely the computer savvy people already know how to protect themselves.

You've misunderstood the point here I think. The firefox plugin is a way to easily utilize the new functionality of Y!Q. If I highlight an entire paragraph or two from the State of the Union, Y!Q will find out the essential words for me.

Wake up and smell the roses. Companies (including Slashdot's favorite pet, Google) release product like this to make money.

It's interesting to read these comments. I am fortunate enough to live in an area large enough to be covered by this new service, and I for one is excited about this offering. Yet the overall vibe among the comments is a negative one. WTF ?

If Google had released a similar product, most slashdotters would have gotten an orgasm.

I've never used a mac for anything more than a dumb terminal connecting to a Unix server, so I can hardly qualify as an Apple enthusiast. However, I would like to take a different angle on Apple's OS X: They took X11 and made it pretty as heck. And this of course leads to better and free alternatives. So cudos to them.

  8. Why did this topic make it to the front page on Is Typing a Necessary Skill? · · Score: 1

Yes ! Of course it's a necessity ! Handwriting and speech recognition is still years away from being able to replace the keyboard. How many of you can honestly say that inputting information into the PDA is as easy as with a keyboard and mouse !??
What baffles me more is that so many people @ slashdot actually feel that typing isn't necessary anymore.

There are world wide Akamai issues. Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, Google, etc. are all affected.
