For us it was a simple decision. The landline came bundled with a new fiber optic internet and tv/cable service here in southern MN. I'm fairly happy with it even if the local ma bell is bitter about the whole competition thing. Free local long distance and crystal clear communication is nice and since I don't personally own a cell - the wife does - work has a number to call, not that I answer it every time. Now if the damn telemarketers would stop calling me!
Liability, yep..give a patient a contra indicated med..and the hospital will get sued big time. Which is more likely without the afore mentioned records.
I think you've hit it exactly. Games are meant to add to a meaningful life with thier entertainment value. The addiction part comes in when its all you do instead of the important parts..like prepare for college, or look for a job, etc etc.
exactly...as long as OEM sales make a profit.."But will Microsoft really listen?" short answer hell no as long the dollars keep rolling in. One of the problems I've run into is with Dell's new Inspiron 1720..comes with Vista preinstalled, try to install XP..good luck its a nightmare..not officially supported for XP by Dell..It involves disabling two pieces of hardware in the bios that require Vista for drivers. Now there's a work around that works, but unfortunately, the hd died an ignomious death before I could utilize it.:(
I know our shop is all XP..even though all the Dells come in with Vista or XP..they all get reimaged with XP, then deployed to the end user. Rumor around here is we will never see Vista installed unless an end user specifically requests it. Too many issues with software and hardware. Our help desk still has to support Vista though..Poor sods.
Use a paper binder to hold your money and cards. Reasons: usually found free at your workplace supply cabinet and only carry what you need: debit card (s), cash, id (s) The rest of what people in thier wallets is mostly useless crap.
I'd say he has a point. The very best public schools in my state of Minnesota are 1. relatively small and 2. Have little or no competition in terms of home schooling or charter schools. The local community also happens to be over 90% white and middle classed. This is said entirely based on my own little view of the universe and I do recognize that its changing every year. Or maybe, I'm just living in an area that still is hanging on to some 1950's values. hmm.
No mention of India or Malaysia?? Perhaps the author should read Friedman's "The World is Flat." updated and expanded. There's a 1/2 billion Indians who want to work and have the technical no how. American companies can't seem to give them capital fast enough.
Maybe this is too simplistic, but what about just making games with all the required libraries, fsck the dll files, and have the system reboot to start the game. Worked for DOS didn't it?
NPR and its local station here in MN MPR do advertise in a fashion. They never fail to announce who's supporting the broadcast. Its usually quick, non abnoxious, and lets the the listener know who's paying the bill. I always try to buy products from these companies. To me, that's the best way to support public radio.
What the average slashdotter doesn't get is this guy is one of the original alpha geeks. He deserves loads more credit. He didn't suggest ideas to a committee, he built the tools, then built the device. That takes an intimate understanding of the subject way beyond what I have for sure. He is of the generation that sent man to the moon using mostly paper and pencil math. We build on the shoulders of common men with extraordinary insights into thier craft.
Thing is - times change, I used to work with a retired IBMer who could design and build a working pc using vacuum tubes, but had difficulty loading drivers in windows. Different times, different skillsets.
I see a future where computer skill and military experience merge to form - corporate mercenaries. A quick, forced entry, a small shaped charge and thier servers are toast. In and out in 10 minutes before the local authorities can react. Cash into the swiss account. ok.. too much Shadowrun as a teenager, but hey it could happen.
Of course they are. My 14 yr old son's level 45 heroine on WOW is obviously an intelligent, fierce warrior who just happens to have a pony tail and nice breasts. He only spends 10 minutes a day rotating her figure at the open screen to examine her ummm gear.. riiight..
That's funny, here I was looking for an old apple case I could stick some intel hardware into tp run xandros on. I like the appearance of Apple way more than the OS. I don't think I'm alone in this.
How about this. Open Xandros Networks, search for firefox, check box, click install. Close xandros networks. Menu - internet - click firefox web browser. Browse. Windows isn't even that easy.
Granted they want 10 usd for the http download to cover bandwidth costs, but the bittorrent is free.
Open circulation edition is stripped down in the fact that cd/dvd burning is limited to 2x. Otherwise it has all the goodness of the best linux desktop ever! (yes I'm a fanboy of Xandros.. no, I don't work there.)
Yeah, my kids got spoiled by MS office (yeah I paid for it) 2000 and when I announced the new pc would have open office and nothing else. I heard one complaint after another. Things like "how do I do font changes?" How do I do (fill in Office equivalent here)? There is a difference in use, not quality. Education and experimentation were needed, but sadly the motivation wasn't there at first. Eventually they learned how to make it work. The uproar has since died down, but will probably happen again at the start of next school year. Motto: Don't go down the MS path - its like crack for ordinary users - they always want more..
Perspective is right. Mine is with broadband, my wife and I were shunned. Dinner was a 5 minute feeding frenzy followed by quick feet back to whatever was online. I made the decision to ditch broadband, the firewall machine, and the print server and s i m p l i f y our digital life to one pc on dial up. My son almost had a nervous breakdown (ok that's an exaggeration) unhooking from Bnet, but in the end I got dinnertime conversation back and actual human contact from my family. Sometimes a family needs to unplug. As a bonus my electric bill dropped 10 bucks too!
That's why the small circle of friends and neighbors I provide IT support for are crystal clear that's it IE that borked thier boxes. IE is why they had to go a day without a system as I reinstalled thier OS. I installed firefox on it and carefully explained to them that if they continue to use IE I will gleefully take more money from them to rebuild again. One friend had to be rebuilt 2x in 3 months. Some users learn slower than others, but they do learn...eventually that is if you charge them enough to fix thier screw ups.
nod to that. Frontier will rape you for $100/month for 2 Mbit/sec or rape you a little less $80/month for 1.5 Mbit/sec. Of course the $15/month dial up sucks(which I am now on - yes, I'm a cheap bastard). The dial up server literally takes a nap 20 minutes into the connection. Deliberate??

I think I can express what everyone is feeling at this moment - ARRRRRGH!

oh come, mod parent up. For those of you who have successfully mated with something other than your pc..

Having so little work to do that you become a slashdot "obsessive-compulsive reloader" ;-)
well shit..I like my job too..
umm, Xandros 3.0 Open Circulation Edition has been available for several months now. http://www.xandros.com/about/downloads.html
