I've been making the same decision. I've just downloaded Debian. Now I have to migrate current apps to a new machine (my wife is not as easy to migrate as my children). As for WINE, I have no experience but from all I've read things should work out fine. I do know from experience that OpenOffice is excellent for all the basics (word processing and spreadsheet).
I don't worry about stuff like "will my children be able to use Windows at school". They're going to adjust and adapt to everything in this world, including multiple operating systems.
People who feel that our kids are raised on nothing but a computer must not have kids. What's too young? How do you know? What makes your choice right for me? This isn't a parenting forum if you haven't noticed!
I took me 12 years to get my BS in Comp Sci. Even though I had 8 years with IBM, the moment I got my degree my resume was accepted over and over as opposed to barely ever.
The best advice I ever got during that stretch was this, "You only have to get a C in your class, but you must get an A at work!".
That takes a lot of the pressure off.
Finally, I plan to return to college for a masters degree (completed in my early 40s), and again be able to easily remarket myself.
You've picked your decision, you must get the others up to speed. Your ability at leadership is being tested. Crying up the PHB food chain doesn't solve the problem. You must get them to work together, you must set deadlines. As deadlines pass overtime becomes necessary. Sure coding can suck under heavy overtime loads, but you're already there. They don't need sleep they need skill.

I went looking for large screen TVs at the beginning of this football season (late August). I have NFL Ticket for DirecTV. The satellite gives a great picture on a DIGITAL TV. This TV does not have an HDTV tuner built in, but it is capable of accepting an HDTV tuner when I decide to buy one. I feel this allows the best picture with great flexibility.
P.S. I don't feel that Digital Cable is worth the money since I already own TiVo.
P.P.S If getting a large screen TV, and it is possible children will be around make sure it has a protective cover in front of the screen!

I'll pick minutes, until someone (third party) publishes a quality of service report that I can believe.
The link to the wired news story took me to a story titled "Porn Biz Offers to Buy Napster"?!?
