Screw the patentability of it. It is disturbing that they are thinking in those terms. Today's benevolent technology aids are tomorrow's tools for oppression.
If China made a move towards Taiwan, they could easily throw the entire semiconductor industry into an uproar. That would have global implications, at least in the short term. This could make China very important to the US and the rest of the modern world. And that would suit the Chinese ego just fine.
Remember what happened to memory chip prices 8 - 10 years ago when Taiwan had that earth quake?
One great thing about engineering and computer science jobs is that they are filled with people who love it so much. I am having a lot more fun now working as an EE with people who love there jobs then I did in non-engineering jobs with people who hated their work.
