I was thinking the exact same thing. Who cares about YouTube...10 YEARS FOR SPRAY PAINTING...are you kidding me...that should be the real topic of discussion whether it's nerd news or not.
Umm sorry but when I watch the news I don't see people running around shooting monsters with rocket launchers...I can't relate to that, I can relate shooting someone in the head with an AR15 in a game to things I can see any night on the news...honestly, I don't think games cause volence at all, and the predisposition is the only realy way they can effect you...I just brought up the topic because I thought quake 2 was a weird choice to gauge the study and it would be interesting to read the study if they had used a variety of games.
Q2 is not realistic when compared to new versions of Grand Theft Auto or anything from the current generation, or last gen for that matter...I wonder if brutal street slayings show any difference versus unrealistic circa 1997 FPS's
Right but the article says can a corporation buy "cool". I think apple, at least Steve Jobs was/is cool, in that respect...Look at when apple emerged they were cutting edge with home PC's(I've seen Pirates of Silicon Valley too many times). Then look at the late 80's early 90's when Steve Jobs wasn't there, they almost went out of business, then Steve returned and you get iMac, iPod, OSX, iPhone, and whatever "hip" stuff they've come out with in the last 10 years.
At the enterprise level we use 3.5" 1.44MB Floppy drives in an elaborate redundant array. It consists of roughly 70,000 Disks, each changed nightly. We haven't had any problems yet. Hopefully the rest of the world will play catch up soon.
How does one become the Open Source Software evangelist at a practically 100% proprietary company?...That's like being a Christian Evangelist at a Mosque.
True, but if they are informed that it does the same thing then they would be more likely to use it. Example: Years back my family started using WordPerfect, because it was already there. Granted I informed them they could essentially do the same thing. But you are very right it has a lot to do with being familiar.
It isn't on there by default, because that would mean people might actually use it...and we can't have people just running around using free software, can we?
In an ironic twist... www.itbusinessedge.com runs Windows Server 2003 Microsoft-IIS/6.0 and NetCraft confirms it and the fact I can't open it at all reaffirms it.
Yeah when I read that small intro, I was thinking "this has got to be geared to the most narrow taget audience you could possibly imagine" I mean, first books for developers, then books for game developers, then character design books for game developers, then finally character design for mobile platform game developers.
Yeah, an in all honesty I don't really care for opennms, we use it currently at our enterprise (something of which I have no control of, I'm the 'Cisco' guy and apparently that is the 'server' guys realm) and at previous jobs I used both cacti and nagios and liked both of them more. But opennms isnt all that bad I guess, Ive used openview too and thats just awful.
I agree...however if the cost after it's all said and done is similar, most larger corporations will stick with what's familar and not go through the trouble...in the long term there may be savings like you said from maintainence, but in my short experience at a large corp you better present some dramatic cost savings if you want your project approved.
Yes I can see how switching to a Mac could absord the cost of Vista and it's hardware requirments but what about the cost of training a whole enterprise of users on MacOSX.
Alright I can see how this could be a problem. But why is no one asking who the hell keeps losing their laptops or having their laptops stolen. I can see it happening, but those numbers seem kind of excessive, especially 10 with senstive data. For some reason I would't be surpised if they are being sold to some source. Because, I've never lost a laptop, nor has anyone I've ever known. I've broken them sure...but cmon.
"Nobody should be using it anyways" is not an excuse. If it is included, it should be held to the same standard as every other application. In some legacy cases I'm sure telnet is of some use. But regardless the fact that it has a practical use or not is irrelevant.
How is it flamebait if someone even mentions God?...the statement was made in a very tasteful way and it is simply the poster's opinion. I know *most* everyone on Slashdot doesn't believe in God in the traditional sense but Intelligent Design is as good a theory as any...If you were really thinking scientifically you would take all theories into account and not dismiss others because of how ridiculous it is solely based on the majority of the scientific community. The majority of the scientific community used to believe the Earth was flat, you couldn't split an atom, among so many other things. Science is not infallible/rant

and I never said they do, I am only saying that it would be interesting to see the difference, also it would make the study more complete.

'I' Before 'E' except after 'C' and when sounding like "Eh" and in "Neighbor" and "Weigh"
In communist China currency.....oh wait.
I think google purchasing youtube was "cool", but anyone who does anything like that after is "uncool". Funny how that works.

ehh all of the Dell XPS laptops can take up to 4gb of ram...and I assume most high performance laptops can as well...Did you even bother looking?
Well Verizon reportedly has about 59 million customers...so that would be like $0.0033898305084745762711864406779661 USD Per subscriber. Have Fun.
Isn't that how Alien vs. Predator started?
I wish Jon Johansen would have done it so he could be called HD-DVD Jon, or maybe Blu-Ray Jon.
