    Who are you to say whether or not my phone calls are important? As long as I'm speaking in a normal speaking voice, nobody should care whether I'm talking to the person next to me, somebody on a cell phone, or my imaginary friend, Fred.

    What is there to "deal" with about people talking on phones? Do you also have to "deal" with people talking to the person next to them?

    In the old days, people who went around talking with no one were considered loopy. Now, we have a lot of these loopy people walking around holding funny little black boxes to their heads.

    I have never understood why people hate cell phones so much. At least you are only assailed by one side of the conversation, unlike two people sitting next to eachother and talking on a plane, say.

    Cell phone half-conversation:

    "Like, really!"

    pause

    "I'm sure!"

    pause

    "No way!"

    pause

    "Of course!"

    pause

    "are you sure?!"

    pause

    "ohmigod! He wouldn't!

    pause

    ad nauseum

    Whats the difference between a passanger talking on his cellphone and two passangers talking to each other on the same plane?

    Sometimes, not much. I recall an annoying conversation in particular. Some Microsoft manager behind me was just pouring out the corporate management boilerplate to his seatmates. It was a disgusting display of technomanagerbabble.

    I consider the whole legal system of the US very much inferior to not just our system, but inferior to most countries in the world.

    Middle East: mostly a disaster, a civilizational dead zone;
    Africa: mostly a disaster;
    South & Central America: corruption is rife;
    Asia: Authoritarian regimes everywhere

    I've been rather general, but MOST coutries? You're certifiable.

    The resctrictions on (neo-)Nazi material is especially puzzeling: don't you want to know what the "enemy" is up to, what misinformation they may be spreading? I understand how both France and Germany can be embarassed by their past, but not talking about doesn't make it not happen, and forcing it underground makes it that much harder to keep track of what's going on.

    What it really means is that the authorities in Germany believe that Nazi teachings/ propaganda/ symbols have some magical power to capture peoples' hearts and minds. That, in spite of history (and lessons learned and associated revulsion of all things Nazi by most sensible folk), the people will, at the mere sight of a swastika, start marching around singing the Horst Wessel song and reenact Kristallnacht and yearn nostalgically for the good old days of the 30s.

    Slavery was in no way unique to the South.

    The Emancipation Proclamation was only for areas in the South not yet occupied by Northern troops. IOW, it didn't free any slaves in Northern-held areas (including Northern/neutral slave states).

    The American Civil War was fought over state sovereignty, not emancipation.

    Thank you. BTW, the US Flag flew over slave states a lot longer than did the CSA flag. Why isn't _it_ a "symbol of slavery"?

    What ever happened to peddling your album on a street corner? Is that too much work and can't be done sitting in bed in your underwear?

    Where I live, there are all these homeless guys collecting money on freeway exit ramps. Why not get them to sell your CDs, too? "Homeless Vet. Will work for food. P.S. Buy a CD for a Starving Artist. I get 20% commission! God Bless!"

    They failed, not because they were wrong, but because they were conquered. IOW, have a lot of guns, but don't try to fight with a regular army, do the guerilla war thing.

    Abusing the patent system by obtaining ridiculous patents is one way of demonstrating how broken the system really is. My all-time favorite is Method of Swinging on a Swing [uspto.gov] I laughed so hard when I read it that I cried!

    Now, if I have a swing just like that, but don't use it that way, do I need a license because I _can_ use it that way? Do I need to keep a hawk-eye on my kids, and if they start doing it that way, I yell at them, "Knock it off, that's unlicensed behavior!"

    This patent is patently stupid.
