You can audit source if you have it, but how many people do? (Answer - look back over some stories in the last year here on Slashdot to see that the answer is, evidently, not enough.)
"Not enought" is not good enough, I agree. But "no single one" is even worst.
You seems to conveniently forget the recent past of this industry.
I got an Apple ][, switched to//e for some years more and only then, in late 80's, switched to a IBM-AT running MS-DOS and Win3.11.
My first Spreadsheet was Visicalc, my second Lotus 1 2 3 and finally Quatro Pro. I used to love Word Perfect. My "DOS" of choice was DR-DOS.
And then everything started to break, except MS-DOS running Win3.11 WFG and MS Office. It took me almost TWO decades to understand exactly why, and it happened when the MS-DOS 6 source code leaked into the wild.
I didn't make the "discovering" (but managed to get the source). I didn't had to look the source, there was a lot of good people doing that around the world. All I got to do is listen to then and, if I find the need, go check myself - what I did.
Your ineptitude to read and understand code is not a good reason to think that nobody can do it for you.
Can you really imagine that anybody with any technical sense or computer experience thinks the mobile desktop paradigm would be good on a desktop PC?
Man, I'm going to scare you, but.. YES. I know a LOT of people, some of them in key holes in software development on my country. A very few of them are techies, but that's does not matter anyway. Techies does not goes to management and, so, does not make key decisions around here.
I still think this is just plain wrong, but as Grand Parent states: You may consider it abhorrent, but you are a minority. The rest of the world uses computers simply as a tool, not as a hobby.. I fear he's right on that point.
We have the notion of the "Crimes against honor". While two of them makes sense (injury and slandering), another one is total crap : defamation.
By Brazilian law, anythings said about someone that makes him looks bad to society can be a crime - even if it's plain true.
I could be processed if I expose some facts about corrupt politicians on my personal blog even by presenting proofs - as theses facts will, definitively, makes them looks bad to society.
Press is risky business in Brazil, you must have enough money to retaliate if you plans to say the true about someone around here. Money, or a good political influence on the "defamed" guy's enemies.
My argument was that There's no way a so well armed country goes downhill without dragging the rest of the world too., and your post seems to enforce my argument.
Rome was, at its time, THE economic, social and cultural lighthouse of the world. But all that just came AFTER Rome became THE military power of that time. Just like USA.
The Nukes, as you correctly stated, assures mutually destruction - and that's the reason Russia is loosing political relevance - they just can't use it.
Money just have value for you if you can defend it. Saddam Hussein learnt this the hard way.
What makes me think if there're not obscure interests from that same minority shareholders.
Who do you know interested on a linux distro's demise, and with cash enough to buy that shareholders?
Show me the law in any nation that states you have the Right to Unlimited Profit.
Such a Law is not needed. You have all the rights you think you have, EXCEPT the ones explicitly (or implicitly) denied to you by the Law.
On the other hand, nobody have the DUTY to grant you Unlimited Profit, so good luck pursuing this right. :-)
Pleade MOD parent up. ABUSIVE MODERATION detected.
As far as I know, no ones leaves functional elevators behind on abandoned sites. ;-)
typo: where I mistype "WFG" please read "FWG", meaning "for work groups"

And it was ever trustful, in the first place?
... if USA didn't ditched the Space Shuttle program too soon...
I managed to misplace "role" to "hole" X-D
While being accidental, it's perhaps convenient - such managers are, in fact, leading the software industry to the hole! :-)
("leading to a hole" is a literal translation from brazilian slang "levar pro buraco", meaning something is going to fail epicly because of someone)
Can you really imagine that anybody with any technical sense or computer experience thinks the mobile desktop paradigm would be good on a desktop PC?

Thanks I'm not moderating now.
I would be stuck in an eternal indecision trying to figure out if I would moderate parent as "Funny", "Insightful" or the old & faithful "Troll". :-)
PLEASE MOD PARENT UP. Abusive moderation detected.
I do not agree with what it's saying, but the opinion is valid and the guy didn't do any offense!
There wasn't any technical need for GNOME. Most people were quite pleased with KDE and its abilities
I failed to follow you here.
Most people is not all the people. If not all the people are pleased with something, then we have a valid technical need for an alternative.
You know, it's good to hear that there're judges doing their jobs nowadays.
If by no other reason, it make us hope that some of them live on America.
PROTEST. The parent IS NOT A TROLL.
You can disklike the opinion, but it's a solid one nevertheless: desktop Linux is a mess nowadays.
Basically this Wordperfect lawsuit is a bit dated and irrelevant today. I'm surprised it wasn't thrown out long ago.
Dated, yes. Irrelevant, not.
The message, if the USA Legal System manages to delivery it, will be : "We will catch you, no matter how much time it takes."
Metrics are favoured by lazy management.
Metrics are also favored by management that does not knows squat about what the heck they are managing.
Free speech must be absolute or else it is worth nothing.
Shout "FIRE" on a crowded movie hall and prove your point. ;-)
You "CAN" say anything about anything. But this will not make you unaccountable for the consequences of your sayings.
And it goes further.

He did something to deserve that restraining order.
Yep.. He dated her.
Please understand my statements as made by a western biased view of civilization. :-)
Adblock, como te amo.
In plain English, for all the non-Portuguese readers:
Adblock, I love you so.
(Me too, by the way)
Steve Jobs was not the originator of the "64K is enough"
I think you mean Bill Gates.
I failed (again) to see the joke or just made a mistake? =]
