A solution would be a separate Internet on which commercial enterprises of any kind are strictly prohibited. Obviously, this is not going to happen at the physical layer or transport layer, but it would at least be possible to write a P2P network on top of IP that has a strong legal protection against company (ab-)use.
Human rights are universal, but the thing is that even if you don't believe in them (which is apparently what you're suggesting) then it's simply a matter of basic human decency and minimal empathy to guarantee any kind of prisoners either receive due process or a halfway humane treatment as prisoners of war. The US has treated the worst Nazi war criminals way better than the inmates of Guantanamo. That really has made many people wonder what happened to your country's basic values. Think about it, why would such a great nation with the largest and most powerful military resort to kidnapping and kidnapping? It makes no sense and has without any doubt made your country worse off than before, both in terms of your human rights records and your safety against terrorism. It makes no sense.
Since "Guantanamo" also has obtained a somewhat unpleasant ring to it (why? no idea!), let's just give it a new name, too. Perhaps something fitting based on classic literature, like "Island of Dr. Moreau".
You guys are a bunch of idiots who will be obliterated by tanks and heavy artillery in two hours if you ever start to fight. But you won't, so there is no need to worry. Go hide in the bushes with your 'bag out bag'.
Thanks to something called the Internet people today have much broader access to independent sources of news, information, interpretations and opinions than ever before in history.
You might not like to face the truth, but there are good reasons for claiming that this is also one of the main reasons for an emergence of new forms of radicalism, a general increase of stupidity and a substantial decline of political culture...
*sigh*
In a working democracy, mainstream media should have a significant effect on people's choices. Would you rather prefer uninformed voters who draw all their 'information' from radical niche media, bloggers and wacky Youtube videos?
It's quite a long stretch to assume that the hackers were Russian. Perhaps they were, but it's more likely that they pulled this off from abroad for safety reasons.
It can be exorbitant for small developers in combination with the other requirements. You also need to buy Macs every 3-5 five years in order to be able to stay afloat as a developer.
Let's say you only update your machine every 5 years (a bit optimistic). Then a realistic estimate for the real development costs is USD 99 x 5 + USD 1300 MacBook Pro 13 + USD 249 Apple Care for MacBook Pro 13 for a total of USD 2044 / 5 years or USD 409 per year, not including any software, online storage and backup, web services, backup software and storage, etc.
For serious business these costs are no problem. For small shareware and occasional developers these costs can be prohibitive. They certainly are the reason why I don't develop for Apple. And don't forget that Apple additionally takes 30% of all your revenue as opposed to 10 - 16 percent that ordinary payment services take, so the real costs for individual developers are much higher.
Clinton's problem is that she has an evil grin.
But as a foreigner, I'm not indifferent about your next president. Trump and Cruz are a horror freak show.
IMHO, the "A" in ADSL already indicated the demise of the Real Internet (TM).

But wait... isn't your proposal un-American? That would be bad!

Amen. Time for everyone to move to the 21st Century.

It's great that there are so many experts on quantum encryption on /. Where else could I get reliable information about it?

Also, 94.2% of all statistics quoted on /. are ad hoc inventions.

I wish you were right, but you're probably not. I predict that your next president will be Donald "assclown" Trump. Mark my words.
