  1. Dell outsmarted MS *Big Time* ! on Is Windows Vista in Trouble? · · Score: 0

This is an easy one. MS's success relied on some two hard facts - the fact that their software was buggy and required upgrades, and the fact that no competition meant they could strongarm OEM's.

Well, well, here it is 2007, the market's way bigger and the universe of user applications is more established. Unless Vista is less buggy than XP by a magnitude (doubtful), or Vista enables a new-breed of must-have application (again doubtful), then WTF is it good for? Sure, it'll creep in through the OEM's, but the buckets of cash MS expected to make, let alone the buckets of cash MS spent building Vista, aren't going to recovered as soon as they like. Heh, nothing succeeds like success, eh?

  2. As long as fair competition holds... on Net Neutrality Never Really Existed? · · Score: 0

Neutrality will hold as long as competition is fair. Internet culture is too long steeped in egalitarianism. If net providers start acting as tollgates, people will move around them. I doubt that 'premium' services can work without some sort of collusion among providers otherwise tit-for-tat throttling will occur. I not so sure it can work in the US, at least, now that the Republicans are on the way out.

  4. The Say/Do Blinders got you. on National Intelligence Director Seeks Expansion of Spy Powers · · Score: 0, Flamebait

The Achilles heel of conservatism is a pride that blinds them to constructive criticism. The image of Kerry as power-seeking is one painted by the Republicans, and yet the very actions of the Republicans paint themselves as the power mad. Stubbornness, intransigence, and absolutism are mistaken for patriotism, wisdom, and religiousness. Reality based folks call it stupidity.

Pay more attention to actions and outcomes. Empiricism is a better judge of character than hot air.

  5. Re:You people are all a bunch of childish FOOLS! on ICANN Wants Immunity · · Score: 0

    1) No dice. The US is doing its best to censor the internet too, (COPA anyone?) plus, it's trying to sell it off to private interests.
    2) There's no freedom of taxation in the US.
    3) Big Deal - it wouldn't be so 'great' if it confined itself to US borders. Better to be a fish in a big pond than a big fish in a small one.
    4) The US can't be trusted. It's currently run by proven liars.

  6. Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of snark on Delphi For PHP Released · · Score: 0

Interesting to read all the bwahaha's in reply to the article. It's true that Borland completely screwed the pooch with it's business strategy. It's also true that Borland had a better approach to tools than Microsoft ever did, at least until the 'bidness' types took over.

Laugh all you want - but in the Microsoft world your choices are .net (interpreted bloat), MFC (useful like a box of hammers), or straight WIN32 (is a box of hammers). You've always been at the mercy of the MS market positioning with MS tools. But hey, at least it's a somewhat effective lifetime employment strategy for folks who like to program with hammers.

    Snooze......

If it's intentional, it's a softball that doesn't really amount to anything. If it's not, some PR hack gets a deserved spanking.

  8. Bong Hits 4 Windows on Windows Vista, More Than Just a Pretty Face · · Score: 0

Nice puff piece. Lot's of eye candy - no meat and potatoes. Seems to be little more than a ploy to force you into using .net if you want vector graphics, although they certainly could have done that for a native API. The rest is security-cover-you-arse pop-ups and we all know who well that's going....

  9. Rambus gets its just rewards on Rambus Losing In Court · · Score: 1

Face the facts folks - Rambus is a vulture technology company. Not only did they file their patents purposely vague to give them ligitation room (indicating they intended to make their money on litigation) but they then used the later opportunity to 'extend' their patent to cover SDRAM - of which they had plenty of inside and illicit knowledge. The Markman ruling pretty much makes them play ball with the real facts - not vague claims. Screw them.
