My one thought is that if the system, or part of it, relies on forcing companies like Cisco to license patents then they'll run into trouble in Europe, where software is currently unpatentable.

Except that you will also have to store 14 days worth of power somehow to get through the night. We really don't have any efficient ways of doing that yet.

What about a moving solar power platform on giant rollers? If it could be made efficient enough, it could power its own movement with energy to spare. Spare energy could be relayed back to earth using microwaves whenever it reached the Earth side of the moon.

4. Probably a mistake on AOL And The GPL · · Score: 1

It always happens. We have a GPL violation story every few weeks. And every time, it turns out to have been an honest mistake. True, AOL should be able to afford enough lawyers to know what it's doing, but it seems to me that they got tripped up by a misunderstanding. I'd bet good money that they thought linking to transmeta's ftp servers would be enough. Of course it isn't, but I predict that once they realise the mistake AOL will switch to complying with the GPL. 'Course, I'll probably get flamed for supporting AOL...

If you're only willing to pay for low-budget, you shouldn't expect a lot of control over the outcome. At a fancy restaurant, they'll make whatever you want as long as they have the ingredients. At McDonald's, you only can order what's on the menu.
The difference is that there is no natural right to eat fancy food. There is a natural right to freedom of expresion. If my site is being blocked by a major backbone provider, then that is arguably infringing on my right to freedom of expression, and also damaging the rights of the provider's customers- there's no sense in free speech if no-one is allowed to listen. Now, I don't have a problem with only the rich being able to afford fancy food. But I do have a problem with only the rich being able to afford their natural rights.

What about you believing that we grew into humans (and humans are really complex, study biology.. work on AI.. you'll get the idea) from.. rocks?! Sounds a lot more crazy to me.

This is what we call the "Argument from personal incredulity". Simply because you find it likely that a theory is incorrect does not mean that it is incorrect. You have to examine the evidence. The evidence clearly points to the early being several billion years old, and life having evolved.

It's worth noting that intuition tells us that the sun goes around the Earth.

8. Quality Degradation on Report From The 2600 Appeal Hearing · · Score: 1

The judges were wondering if the ability to video the screen of your TV, or to use a degraded analogue signal, meant that fair-use rights were being preserved.

I would argue that for fair-use purposes, the quality must remain the same. What if the film relies on its visuals? 2001 anyone?

So let's try an analogy, because that's what everyone else seems to be using... I'd argue that we need a whole new paradigm in order to deal with the net, but that's a discussion for another day.

This is an extract from my favourite poem, Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Kubla Khan"

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree; Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea.

Now, let's "degrade" that...

In Xanadu, Kubla Khan decreed a stately pleasure-dome. This was the same place as Alph, the sacred river, which ran through caves that man could not measure down to a sea, where there was no sun./

Would that be a fair alternative for fair-use purposes? No.
Would a degraded version of a film, therefore, be a fair alternative for fair-use purposes? No.

I'm pretty sure the analogy holds; if it doesn't, I'm sure some AC will flame me and explain why.
