In Winnipeg, Manitoba, our DSL and Cable internet providers have a lightspeed, or lite speed. a.k.a. 5x dialup speeds. That 5x dialup is based on a 28.8kpbs modem, not 57.6kpbs modem. So yeah 12-15KBps is about the top end on those accounts.
I primarily use FTP (enter favorite ftp software here) to backup data to another system. Though I have not broken down and automated it through scripting/cron. If I need a permanent storage type of backup, then off to CD the items go.
If you drop the Floppy Drive you have to drop the POCD (Plain Old CD ROM). You can only use CD Writers, re-writers, or other writable/re-writeable media. So when you take away the FDD you have to remove the CDROM too, as it would be pointless to only have a read only device as your only source of removable media.
Personally I would be all for it. As long as it meant the games I want to play are Free ($0), or next to nothing. As long as we are not talking about pop up or advertising that gets in the way of the game play, why not. But if we are talking about having to watch an ad or something in the middle of critical game play, then forget it. Plus we would have to watchout for people putting ads in between screens, i.e. loading the next section of a game. They may be delaying the game loading longer than it would normally take.
I seem to remember programs such as hytelnet and gopher that linked to other pages. Both what I would consider static and dynamic... Now I know those standards were out well before WWW links.
I agree it is most likely a hoax. But come on, it is easy to have that many lines of source code in a Windows evironment, especially using micrsoft libraries.
for providing a program that users choose to use for illegal reasons, shouldn't gun makers be able to be sued for making items peopls use for illegal purposes?
Not Trolling, and a little off topic. But North America is getting ridiculous in the number of law suits that open for stupid reasons.
Other countries like Italy, have a large portion of thier daily TV schedule, consisting of variety shows. Personally I like that type of show. Problem is they have fallen to the wayside in North America, with TV broadcastors opting for the types of commercials we see now adays. I don't see what would be so bad about bringing them back to the mainstream. Some of the product spots are quite funny.
The wonders of/., finding things you have been looking for while reading about a somewhat unrelated topic. Thanks for the link to Vuescan, I have finally been able to use my scanner in Linux. Granted now I have to come up with $40 US to pay to get rid of the $40 watermark. But I figure a working scanner is better than a dust collector.
Uses the same principle as DirecPC, so yeah is is useable for downloads. Just remember it will still take 5 mins to send that 1MB e-mail outbound though. But then again why on earth would you send an e-mail that large.
I recently (4-5) months ago bought 2 of the MicroSizer RC's on seperate frequencies. I had never seen a spam on them prior to buying them. Then a couple of months after that, boom the spam was everywhere. Guess I was one of the folks who was not assimilated. Course if I would have waited the prices would have been more reasonable, like they are now.
Well why not give a name too... hmmm. L.O.T.S. Could translate to Location of the Servers, or even Lord of the Servers (but that is more a SysOps name)
You asked for help here on Slashdot, lets face it, if you get name suggestions here they will no longer be unique. Though they may still be cool.

Follow up to my comment that I found Gollum funny. I agree whole heartedly that he is a tortured character but come-on who could not help but laugh at the imagery when Gollum was arguing with himself.

Lets face it, some of us have never read the book, so nothing about the movie can be much of a disappointment for us. My self I loved it and the Gollum character was the best peice of comedy I have seen this year. The overall story line seemed to cary forward from FoTR, with out leaving you wondering what else may have happened. The battle scenes were great. Like last time I cannot wait to see the final installment, as I was left feeling, it cannot be over yet.
And for those of you that have read the books. You too can have your opinions, these here are mine. It is my favorite movie of the year, and I personally feel it should get movie of the year in at least some of the award categories.
It seems logical that the ISP is using NTP to synch their server times. Why not ask them to provide you with access to a server of theirs running NTP. Seems simple enough.
Last time I looked SETI@HOME can be used as a screensaver, and from what I understand it is Network aware/capable. But probably not what you want, or could have approved.
... is that Adobe's own software is probably responsible for many of the pirated e-books out there. All it takes is one employee at the company the e-book was developed at to save the e-book without the DRM protection and oh my god, people are suddenly able to distribute copies of that one file. Truthfully you cannot tell me that a good portion of pirated software/e-books don't come directly from the developing companys employees leaking stuff.
My personal weirdest case was created after having bought an old non standard XT Mother board and a bunch of controllers and stuff from a computer garage sale (junk bins at a local computer store) when I first got into computers. It was an old dresser drawer we had, that I mounted a powersupply, Motherboard and Dual Floppy drives in, and used it in a Tower fashion. Oh yeah and the monitor was entirely open, no case what so ever. (Kinda Dangerous, but then again I was a young teen, what did I care?)
Now this is a solution. I like this one. Yes security can still be an issue, but as long as you do everything with in reasonable power. Using a solution such as described here is about the best I can figure on. Don't get me wrong using the tools such as FTP are much better for transfering files, but 99% of the users are only *barely* educated in the art of Internet usage, and did not have a clue what the original next was about.

I say bring back shell accounts and keep broadband. I was personally was very miffed when my ISPs stopped offering shell access. I still work well over 50% of the time in CLI environments. And actually prefer the responsiveness and ease of use they offer. I also prefer certain applications in GUI but that is not for this rant.

I am not sure if I have a favorite *nix shell.
But it does lead you to wonder why no one has made a turtle shell. Or being risky in these times why not a bomb shell.
The nameing of shell environments in *nix seems to stray away from any 'real shell' naming.

This is where SCSI controllers, and SCSI CD Burners and SCSI DVD drives come in handy. I suppose nowadays there is Firewire and USB 2.0 devices too.
