  1. Hierarchy... on DNA Suggests Three Basic Human Groups · · Score: 1

The three groups are Utlanning, Framling and Ramen?

  2. Re:Is He Guilty on Conviction of Sen. Ted Stevens Is Thrown Out · · Score: 2, Interesting

Oh, my. How do you not understand just how critical presumed innocence is. Your examples miss the point entirely.

Cops presume innocence until presented with probable cause. Without presumption of innocence, search and seizure would be effectively unlimited.

Bail is set by judges after weighing the evidence presented preliminarily. Without presumption of innocence, why should there be bail at all?

OJ may very well be a murderer, but he is innocent. Considering him--or any other person acquitted of a crime--to be "guilty" just because you think so, is a shameful miscarriage of justice, much less decency.

  3. Re:Anyone get the feeling... on Patriot Act to be Expanded · · Score: 1
Now please name a few cases from history where a compromise could not be reached and where terrorism was then stopped by all out warfare.

The revolutionary war (the terrorists (e.g. Boston Tea Party) won)
The Spanish-American war (how many ships have been sunk by Spain lately?)
World War I ("terrorism" writ large was stopped)
    World War II (see WWI)

Sorry, but war is still sometimes necessary for the redress of evil. Evil it is, but necessary all the same.

  4. Re: Problems (Brilliantly Subtle)(Spoiler!) on Review: Planet of the Apes · · Score: 1
I think it is a brilliantly subtle piece of social commentary which brings the audience into the story.

Consider the situation before he left for "home:"

    • The world had been transformed into a place where all sentient beings on the planet could live peacefully in cooperation. Inter-species (inter-racial) relationships are clearly considered healthy and normal. Clearer heads will now prevail with the death of the General, and the world is poised for a new breakthrough of tolerance and equality.
    • But, he doesn't want to stay - he wants to go "home."
    • We want him to go home, because we would want to go home - where things are "normal" - where we no longer face issues of racism, slavery and mindless hatred - where we have conquered these problems - where those who are different are to be welcomed as equals, not feared and exploited.

He comes "home" not to the 2100's, but to present-day America. He is greeted with weapons drawn and flashbulbs popping. He is different, and how is he treated? Isn't this exactly what we would do?

Welcome to our world (the audience's world), where we believe we have already solved these problems.

    Have we?

Yes, it's exactly like a religion. RMS is their God, and as such he is above criticism, the FSF web page is their Bible, and FSF Evangelists dispense URLs the same way Christian Evangelists dispense Bible chapter references. (e.g. John 1:20).

I just had to laugh. John 1:20 says (translation mine):

"He confessed, he did not deny it, but he confessed, 'I am not the Christ.'"

    Too appropriate... :-)

  6. Some SAFE Act provisions on House subcommittee passes crypto bill · · Score: 2
I found a few interesting points in the text of this bill (Note the search warrant/probable cause clause -- somebody was thinking on this one!):

"It shall be lawful for any person within any State, and for any United States person in a foreign country, to use " (or sell) "any encryption, regardless of the encryption algorithm selected, encryption key length chosen, or implementation technique or medium used."

"Neither the Federal Government nor a State may require that...a key, access to a key, key recovery information, or any other plaintext access capability be:"

"built into computer hardware or software for any purpose;"

"given to any other person, including a Federal Government agency"

"retained by the owner or user of an encryption key or any other person"

"The use of encryption by any person shall not be the sole basis for establishing probable cause with respect to a criminal offense or a search warrant."

"The Attorney General shall compile, and maintain in classified form, data on the instances in which encryption (as defined in section 2801 of title 18, United States Code) has interfered with, impeded, or obstructed the ability of the Department of Justice to enforce the criminal laws of the United States."
