This is good, and I agree with the change, I think there has been a fair amount of bad feelings by developers when code has been wrapped in a proprietary product. Even though none of those poroprietary products have sealed their efforts, codeweavers does donate back to wine and transgaming is available via CVS.
I am curious about what will happen to the existing wine trees out there and in process of development. If I am correct they will not be allowed to borrow from the tree effective date being the liscence change, they will in fact, with the amount of work that goes into wine, end up with a stale tree quickly.
Is there a way around this ?
There is obviously no way to make the liscence apply retroactivly, and that would be wrong, is there any way to ensure certain portions of the new tree dont make it into a proprietary product bundle ?

The answers given were good, to the point and basically good answers.
THE QUESTIONS SUCKED !
This has too be one of the shortest most boring interviews with Alan Ive seen. Alan doesnt seem to be as forthcoming with tangents as some interviewees. But thats him, me id talk about everything under the sun.
Long story short, and a note to interviewers, If you actually get time to ask someone like this questions in the future, give some thought to the questions youre going to ask, this one about put me to sleep.
This will be funny, the errors that are appearing in genetic replication that lead to obesity,
Ever notice the more dysfunctional someone is the fatter their cat ?
This will be hilarious, first a genetic predisposition to obesity, followed by some loon that just cant let go of "Fluffy" I can see it now CAT-KONG (Its a funny childrens book)
An 80 lb cat, a shortened life span and an already neruotic owner that couldnt let go thie first time around, watch this become a really sad vicious cycle, copies of copies, getting fat and dying yet faster than the last time around. Maybe I should go after a Vet Liscence.....
If you know what you are doing, you can run W2K server WITOUT IE, You need to make a special OEM cd using their toolkit, and you can even do other fun things like put InetPub AND IIS on a sperate partition, under users that have no access to the rest of the partiotions , hence the OS. NSA has some good info on the latter.
The courts are compltley ignorant on this matter, so are their 'expets' for the most part. Windwows will run fine without IE, at least, 95, NT 4.0 and W2K , SP is 2k on steroids with eye candy, The OEM install kit(XP) has a network ready bootable CD image that wii RUN ANY(IE included, Abobe, you name it), Windows app under it you want this should be PROOF alone. It starts as only a background and a shell window, you can run anything else from it you want executing it from the command line, Beauty is it will handle Win32 AND NTFS partitions, makes a wicked hack tool for a dead or funked machine, or to change the SAM around:)
This sounds cool, and Im glad someone is on this track, in 20 years people will be sayign (as they do with TV) , 'People used to think this would hurt their eyes' , like my mom used to say about the TV.
I always love the sci-fi flicks where they have something like this on a thin stick near their eye, walking around in a dark smokey ship hold. a good slap upside the head and , ouch. no more eye.
Or the IBM commercial....same thing.
Im not so worried about the reitanl scanning effects, lasers(no not the little led jobbers), arcs, you name it and Ive looked at it. I can still see, I may have had vison problems for a day or so after some of the incidents but it healed(I know I understand some dont).
What Im WORRIED about is having something the size of a frigging pencil 1 inch from my eye, that sounds scarrier than potential retinal damage.
Well even a blind man can hit a dart board half the time.
To be honest I have more belief in certain sci-fi writews in the long term of prediction, HG Wells for one. If not take litteraly of course.
AS far as THIS goes...
'rant goes, I was going to find a science timeline to refute it with a few choice examples, but I think I'll leave it at one: The Internet, which allows rabble-rousing pedants to blow off steam into the air of a virtual domain rather than taking up valuable public park space with their soapboxes and shrill, infantile'proclamations
Two points, the internet was one of the things I was ranting about, digital dissemination of infromation is leading corporations to crack down and stifle speech more than before.
Medical breakthroughs dont mean shit when we have twice as many people starving to death, etc.
As far as the soapbox part goes ????
Well I was a loudmouthed opinionated pain in the ass before the internet came to be. I think in a past life I mighta been standing on one.......
---begin rant---
One difference, I will actually backup my words with action, whatever neccesary, I have convictions, right or wrong, theyre mine. Im not (and im not saying you are so dont take this wrong) One of those mealy mouthed politically correct spinless bastards that tries to whitewash everything, while at the same time tries to steal rights and freedoms from you, saying if you respond in a negative way you are a blah blah blah or hiding something or someother crap meant to silence you further.
I was raised to fight, my son will be raised to fight, no matter what the cost, to preserve integrity, not to hide under a shroud of fear,
Humans do some things better than any other 4000 years and it does not change, only the scenery, make no mistake, histroy has tought us this again and again, we kill, plunder and oppress. Until we understand and embrace this we cannot change it.
----end rant----
On a whole, lives taken by a result of technology from 1900 to lives saved,....guess what your argument loses EVERY time, it has been studied, and proven.
Python has all you need, If I were to design a language from the ground up it would act and look alot like Python, that said, there is already something there and no need to push the edge of insanity writing my own language again, I did when I was younger, in the early 80's. No enough caffiene on the planet to try it again.
Python will, if designed properly handle any load you could want to throw at it, it is portable as it gets, its easy to debug.
I cannot imagine what you are writing, or your boss thinks youre going to write that needs all that in one place at the same time. My bet is this is a buzzword hyped dude that has no Idea of the actual functional requirments. He wants an IDE and RAD, Im assuming so any 12$ an hour lackey can help support it at a later date as well as speed initial development. If portablity is the least of your concerns(in short term) VB.net would be the choice. In about 2 years VB.net programmers will be like VB programmers are now....a dime a dozen. That has more value than you can imagine on a large scale project whose lifecycle is indeterminite.
Screw em all and write it in assy, dont let em see any progress and then unleash it upon them complete, debugging is easy, if its wrong it dosent run. Its portable, from same architecture to same architecture(snicker), it actually will scale(buzzword insert)BUT THE SINGULAR MOST IMPORTANT PART is Youll have a job for life, at whatever you want em to pay you to maintain it:)
Im stil waiting for the flying car promised in the 50's

Predicting what an OS is going to be like now is hilarious. The systems architecture, may, be the exact same basis the PC has been for 20 years no. I got my first IBM PC in 81, they havent changed as much as you think, open up one of the antiques , youll see....
So what is a computer going to be like in 10 years ? If you can predict this one way or another. Same or Radically different you could be the next BG....
In a small town (where I work) they have pretty progrewssive ideas on power and communications,
First they have community power, almost 1/2 the cost of Ohio Edison in the next town over. Second is community cable, once again much cheaper, third is cable internet access, $20 a month compared to Time Warners, which you can still get here,
NOW about a year ago Wadsworth put FIBER to every home in wadsworth, long term plans include long distance. AND the ability to selcetivly shut down electical stuff on peak demand, (just your air conditioner, etc) to avoid brownout, because of the above reasons , and one of the best public school systems in the country, population is exploding.
Wadsworth is a great town and I lived there during my high school years, BUT If i lived here again an axe and cutters would hit that fiber so fast it'd make your head spin. Shutting down services on your panel selectivly MY ASS.
Years ago Infoseek offered a version of their search engine to Index LARGE collections of documents. We had over 500,000 IT was around 15k if I remeber correctly. Python on a Sparc 20, (20k itself at the time with mem proccesors array and tapes) So we had alomst 4k tied up in the whole thing, There was if I remeber correctly a per site, or per page fee in addition over so many documents, I made an error in a config file once and allowed it to traverse links, other than filling the hard drive, quickly, the additional costing we did after to see how much it would be should we decide to keep those docs was hilarious.
20k, Isnt bad at all if your talking some serious indexing. We indexed 5, F500 compaines techincal documents at the time, before they were all in house, this was 97-98. It was slick, I often wondered what happened to that software package.
Anyone know what google is written in ? I decompiled a fair bit of Infoseeks just to see what was what, and because I could:) Indexing LARGE repositories isnt easy and config can be a pain. 20k sounds ok to me. I have YET to see anopen source solution that can handle VERY large document sets ASPSeek, but it still has issues, and over about 2.5 million docs I hear its a dead horse.

America did quite well, BEFORE it stated participating in a global marketplace, better than it does now. We had our OWN SELF sufficient industry. Contained within, we needed imports of VERY few items, prior to th 70 oil wasnt needed as an import. Rubber, Sugar and a few hard raw materials were the only imports needed.
I would GLADLY see america's import/export closed, it would be a boon to our domestic industry hard at first but much better in the long run, CAN NAFTA, and make all who import pay tarriff, heavy ones, they make us why not us them ?
My life depends little on others sacrifice, myself and my family HAVE sacrificed much, for 200 years every generation except my father's has fought in our military. We have sacrificed in industyr as well, NOW you tell me what good ANY of those sacrifices did for US no, in WWI and WWII ? Europe is free, but how does that help Me ? I live in the states.

:)
It starts as only a background and a shell window, you can run anything else from it you want executing it from the command line, Beauty is it will handle Win32 AND NTFS partitions, makes a wicked hack tool for a dead or funked machine, or to change the SAM around
:)
Its portable, from same architecture to same architecture(snicker), it actually will scale(buzzword insert)BUT THE SINGULAR MOST IMPORTANT PART is Youll have a job for life, at whatever you want em to pay you to maintain it
Im stil waiting for the flying car promised in the 50's
....futurists have NO clue what so ever !
....
Or the atomic car promised by ford in the 60's
Or the Artificial intelligence android promised me in the 70's
Or......I get it
All this technolgy only makes it easier to kill each other, steal each other land and money, and pretty much lead more misearble meaningless existences than life was 50 years ago....
Predicting what an OS is going to be like now is hilarious. The systems architecture, may, be the exact same basis the PC has been for 20 years no. I got my first IBM PC in 81, they havent changed as much as you think, open up one of the antiques , youll see
So what is a computer going to be like in 10 years ? If you can predict this one way or another. Same or Radically different you could be the next BG....
Horseshit all of it...
In ohio, they are doing this in several place,
In a small town (where I work) they have pretty progrewssive ideas on power and communications,
First they have community power, almost 1/2 the cost of Ohio Edison in the next town over.
:) Indexing LARGE repositories isnt easy and config can be a pain. 20k sounds ok to me. I have YET to see anopen source solution that can handle VERY large document sets ASPSeek, but it still has issues, and over about 2.5 million docs I hear its a dead horse.
20k, Isnt bad at all if your talking some serious indexing. We indexed 5, F500 compaines techincal documents at the time, before they were all in house, this was 97-98. It was slick, I often wondered what happened to that software package.
Anyone know what google is written in ? I decompiled a fair bit of Infoseeks just to see what was what, and because I could
WTF !!!!!!!!
...not missed at all Good Riddance !
WILL YOU STOP WITH THE GODDAM FAKE DEATH ANNOUNCMENTS ?????
What , Alan Thicke, Steven King, who elses fake death announcment have I missed ?
I know this is a troll ???, Or what the hell it is.
Its kinda morbid....And a little loopy....
I can see it now....
Sad News CDWert found dead at 30
CDWert an prolific poster, and notoriously bad typist of slashdot found dead today at his console, cause of death is expected to be a caffiene overdose. Even though most of us dislike him his spirited rants he will be
Noone said YOU HAD to buy.
It always kills me outsiders views on this country, I have travelled ALL over the world, and they have No clue what is going on here. I guss if they did , THEY would be the singularly most powerfull nation on earth, as we are. Militarily, Economically, Socially, etc. I guess the point is they dont get it, if they did they would be where we have been the last 100 years.
