  1. Re:Sun is good for one thing on Sun's Last Stand · · Score: 1
Beyond that, I'm not sure what Sun machine's are good for.

Shifting I/O is all that matters. CPUs are so fast nowadays that for 99% of apps, the CPU is fast enough. You need good I/O to be able to use all those Gigabytes of RAM and Terabytes of disk. Sun understand this, and supplies it better than anyone.

Of course that makes the hardware more expensive than low-end Intel boxes. You get what you pay for.

  2. Re:Clincher? on Can We Finally Ditch Exchange? · · Score: 1

Actually, I think Exchange will be the last one to go. Corporate types *live* in Exchange, it's the #1 app for most large companies. Replacing Office is much easier than replacing Exchange.

The only way you'll get execs to even consider throwing out Exchange is if you produce something with better Blackberry integration.

  3. Re:GPL to Rook's 7 on Bill Gates Says GPL Is Like Pac-Man · · Score: 1

If GPL is a pawn, it is a pawn in a critical position at this point in the "game".

MS is specifically attacking the GPL, and seeking to associate the rest of the Open Source movement with the GPL to widen the damage. The Open Source movement therefore needs to defend the GPL - even those folk who don't agree with it - because if MS is successful, everyone gets dragged down.

The fact that the GPL imposes restrictions gives MS the opportunity to tell the world at large that these restrictions are in some way a bad thing. We need to ensure that the message gets out that the restrictions are *not* a bad thing, except for adherents of a dead business model. We need to concentrate on this, and not get involved in finger-pointing about whose license is better.

Remember WWII. Even if you think RS is a damn commie, you may still need to be on the same side in order to defeat a worse enemy.

  4. Get some expert help on What Do You Do To Relieve Lower Back Pain? · · Score: 1

If your lower-back pain happens while you're working, you need to improve your ergonomic environment. The only real way to do this is to get a consultant in to look at how you are sitting, using the keyboard/mouse etc. If you are employed, your employer may well pay for this. It can be very surprising how much improvement they can make to your comfort by a few simple improvements.

Exercise and keeping your body to a reasonable weight are also good ideas ... but not sufficient on their own if you are sitting incorrectly for 8 hours a day.
