The number of people that would trust a video call with someone they know is substantially larger than people who believe a random e-mail, especially if both are coming from a home address.

What if you're working for a big company, and your boss Skypes you from his house, and says it somewhat irregular, but there's an important invoice that needs to be paid right now. He's e-mailing you the invoice right now, and he assures you it's legit and urgent.

Well, it's not your boss but a foreign hacker who used a couple of facebook photos to fake a live conversation.

You mean, computer can generate an entire movie without having to hire real actors? So Hollywood movie stars can't make millions anymore? Cry me a river.

In a Hollywood movie, you know it's all fake, so it won't matter if the actors are fake. It's all about entertainment.

The danger comes from people manipulating things that are supposed to be true, like video recordings of political figures.

  4. Just wait, and it will stabilize itself. The volatility is caused by a new asset starting out at zero, and trying to discover its real price. People are excited now, but in a few years time, it will become boring, and volatility goes down as price settles somewhere.

The GP described a chicken and egg problem

That problem was solved too. We now have chickens and eggs.

No doubt it will. The big question is, after it pops, what will the price be ?

  8. The volatility is a temporary thing. After the first gold nugget was ever found in a river, how long before it had a price that was stable enough to use it as global currency ? I'm guessing it took more than 10 years.

Bitcoin is negative sum, because someone has to pay for the electricity.

You have to offset the costs to the benefit of decentralized currency exchange. With growing utility, everybody can be a winner.

  16. It doesn't, duh. Ionizing UV light does

US Federal Communications Commission material defines ionizing radiation as that with a photon energy greater than 10 eV (equivalent to a far ultraviolet wavelength of 124 nanometers).

The longer wavelength UV (UVA/UVB) is between 280-400 nm, but can still contribute to cancer.

  17. so someone on the low end of that range would -- if they were lying down -- receive about 840 W of energy from the Sun

Suppose we built a large microwave oven, of about 840W, with a carefully designed radiation pattern that has no hot spots. Would you volunteer to climb inside ?

  18. Firstly while lower energy UV are non ionizing

Skin cancer due to UV has been mentioned several times in this thread. You may want to be more precise in your wording.

  21. I know. The point is that you can't make a blanket statement that all non-ionizing radiation is safe.

  22. What about second- and third-order harmonic generation
