  1. The Author isnt the problem... on The Copyright Fuss Revisited · · Score: 2, Insightful

Please excuse my ignorance on this because I haven't read the essay yet, but from my perspective, the problems aren't with the authors, but with the corporations that own the authors work. I don't think the author gives a rats ass who does what with something he/she created once their dead, only the cooperation that owns the rights of that authors work cares. I personally say that when someone dies, so does the copyright, END OF STORY!!!

  2. Turn it off! on The Ethics of Desktop Chips Stuffed Into Laptop PCs · · Score: 2, Informative

When I purchased my HP laptop around 2 years ago, all I had to do was click on the little "SpeedStep" icon in the system tray, and then select the option to NOT cut the CPU time in half when running on battery power. I remember this utility being an Intel program so if you don't have it on your computer, I would contact the manufacturer and tell them to send you a copy of the utility.

  3. Re:Chimera for OpenOffice? File formats are the ke on OpenOffice Beta for Jaguar/X11 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

You said that the team says there isn't a good seperation of the display code and everything else. Maybe this would be a good time to modify the existing software and seperate that out. Then it should be quite simple to build a native OS X GUI instead of kludging another GUI into the existing codebase. For me, I would be content with an ugly user interface using X11 for the next year or two while the core OpenOffice code is modularized a little more. Then when the GUI for OS X is built, we would know that it wasn't a hack, but a good port that will be native to OS X.

  4. Unbelivable!!! on Protecting Your DRM Rights · · Score: 4, Insightful

Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America, said of the Lofgren bill. "You could download a million movies a day, and no penalty for it."

I can't believe that these people actually think like this. The legislation doesn't say anything about giving the user the right to share and steal the music without punishment. There will still be punishment for stealing a movie or music (if caught). It's unbelievable how these people think that just by having the right to have "Fair Use" of a product for personal reasons equates to mass piracy being legal.

Ummm.... actually I'm willing to bet that you do have at least Cat1 cabling in your building. Unless you don't have a phone line at all, Cat3 has been the standard cable used for regular phone lines in homes for quite a few years now. So their gist is that they can get high-speed data off regular phone lines.

  8. Depends on what your watching on To HDTV or Not to HDTV? · · Score: 2, Interesting

If you have, or planning on having a good DVD collection, it's worth every penny!

I got an HDTV about a year ago and yes the prices have dropped, but then again I've been watching high quality movies for about a year now.

If your looking at watching regular tv shows with the HDTV, you won't get any better picture. One day HDTV will be nice on regular television, but the DVD really shows what HDTV can do.

Also I'm not sure if the rest of the HDTV manufacturers do this, but the Mitsubishi brand has a lifetime commitment to send a tech to your home and upgrade the software or hardware in your HDTV to be compliant with the new HDTV standard once it comes out.

Sorry, but OSX beat everyone to the finish on this one. Apple has had OSX out since March and it's been doing the transparency thing since day one. Sorry guys, but Apple beat MS to market on this one, and it's always turned on.

  10. Backdoors in Airplanes? on Philip Zimmermann and 'Guilt' Over PGP · · Score: 1

Ok this point has already been pressed in earlier posts, but it has a good point. It's just a tool! In another scope, an airplane is also another tool. It's main purpose was to help transport people all over the world in a much quicker and easier fashion than say a car or boat. It's been a very good tool in usage for many many years, but you still run the risk of getting the wrong hands taking over the plane. What do we do about it? Why don't we just put a new transmitter and receiver into these planes so that when the government doesn't think their flying appropratly, then the government can start flying the plane remotely? . I'm sorry but bad people will do bad things, so why punish the good? I don't think I want a polotician to decide if the data I'm sending is being used for good or bad. Or I don't want a polotician to find some good information in my encrypted data to sell that information to a competing company (which I can just about guarantee would happen). Lets quite crisizing the good tool known as PHP just because you get those few bad apples that use it for bad things.

Note that I said "healthy criticism" because I think some fellow /.ers have way to much time on their hands and have nothing to do other than nitpick over stupid shit such as someone having their own opinions and the occasional misspelling. Two words explains my feelings about some fellow /.ers, "Grow Up"!

  12. Works great on a mac!!! on Myst III: Exile Review · · Score: 2

I tried to install Myst III on my laptop and Installsheild wouldn't even get me to the main welcome screen. Installsheild would crash in kernel32.dll, and we all know what they means! Anyways since I had a G4 on my desk I decided to see how it worked there. The install went flawlessly under Mac OSX, but the sound and graphics were extreamly choppy while running the game. Since I was running this under Classic and not the true OS 9, I rebooted to OS 9 and everything else has worked flawlessly. It looks like Ubisoft has put almost all, if not all of their efforts into making Myst III work great on a mac, but not very well on a PC. If you do have a G3 or G4 to play on I would recommend getting Myst III. The 360 degree views of the game are wonderfull!

I hate to say it myself, but your right. I am part of the analysis team at my current company and since this company is an M$ solutions provider we do everything in M$ tools. Out of all their tools it's got to be the most straight forward and easy to understand program I have used. I can retreive all my old Word documents in just a few seconds and it has a really nice history interface.
