  1. Python + barcode scanner on Internet Book Database? · · Score: 1

This kind gentlman has posted a solution for owners of books that have barcodes. Scan in to a text file, run the script and it gets the info from Amazon.

  2. Maybe cdconnection.com on Pre-1994 Reference to e-Commerce? · · Score: 1

From their site: "Welcome. You're connected to CDconnection.com!. ... We have been serving the online community since 1990." I read of people ordering through them via telnet even.

  3. minidisk never took off? on Quarter-sized CD's? · · Score: 0

Whoops, that's right, I forgot: there is no market outside the US.

  4. What's so surprising? on ClearChannel Plays It Safe · · Score: 1

I don't see what's so surprising about this. ClearChannel is a commercial interest which means they choose what to put on and thus, to many, discriminate against such alternatives as independent labels and other forms of communication. They're a private company and they do whatever it takes to follow the yellow brick road. There has been little enough concern about the airwaves for a long time (think about what happened with low power FM). Radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, films, are for the most part commercial interests and are run as such. If you want something different, speak up to your reps so there's more choice. And, in any case, listen to your local college radio or one of the good public radio stations.

It is disheartening that they include anti-war songs.

  5. iBook on Which Laptop To Buy? · · Score: 1

The new iBook is far more exciting than any of the current ThinkPads. I'm a fan of ThinkPads, sturdy, wonderful design, really solid. However, the iBook has taken over my world what with OSX/BSD, VirtualPC, Linux for PowerPC and iTunes to sooth me while I work. The price cannot be beat. All this without touching an Apple for over 5 years now.

  6. Why bother on Half Keyboard, Full Bore · · Score: 1

For PDA note taking I use the Stowaway. Folds to the same volume as my Visor, weighs little, gives me a full size keyboard with great feel. I love seeing new devices and approaches but I've got to wonder about this one...

  7. Real Goods is an excellent source of knowledge on Are Hybrid Solar/Grid Houses Practical? · · Score: 2

Check out http://www.realgoods.com/. They have a strong collection of books on alternative energy and construction materials. They are also a good source to purchase solar, hydro and other forms of alternative energy source equipment from.

They also host educational sessions but I have no firsthand experience with them.

  8. The bummer is no copy/paste on Rich Text Java Applet as Substitute for <TEXTAREA>? · · Score: 3

I looked into this in the past and could only find tools that allow you to format text already writtin in the tool. Text and images on the clipboard cannot be pasted in. Of course you can write an img src=... but that is not friendly for my population of content creators.

  9. Oh yeah? on Global Warming Studies Improve · · Score: 3

From NYTimes: "Using two different computer simulations of climate and the oceans, separate research teams have concluded that a buildup of heat in the seas over the last five decades was almost certainly caused by the heat- trapping effect of greenhouse gases released into the air by human activities." http://www.nytimes.com/2001/04/13/science/13CLIM.h tml

  10. Dead. Not. on Is MiniDisc Dead? · · Score: 1

MD is an easy format to perform copying (from A to B), is instant on, and sound quality is fabulous; MP3s still require ripping CDs to PC + consequent storage space, then transferring to device (A to B to C) and sound quality can vary. For the mass, the choice is MD in ease of use. (Another thing that bothers me is the idea of having an enormous number of songs in a single device with a poor interface to access them; I don't generally listen to 12 hours of music at a stretch anyway).

A separate issue is how poorly MD technology has been marketed. In Japan they are all over the place, in the US they are exotic, no so sure about Continental Europe. I figure there must be something behind it. Could it be pressure from the recording companies? I remember the whole mess around cassette tapes and such.

  11. Placeware on Shared Whiteboard Using GTK Or QT? · · Score: 1

    http://www.placeware.com

Why bother implementing it, it's already out there for free as long as you hav a small group. For large groups, you have to get a license.

  13. Psion is great on Which Handheld for In-Field Service Work? · · Score: 1

I used the Pilot for over 2 years and I gave it up. I need to take a lot of notes and write whenever I get the inspiration. Grafitti was too much of a hamstring for me. I went for the Psion after reading a lot of complements about their keyboard. I love it, the feel of the keyboard is great, it's touch typable, and sufficiently small to carry with me everywhere.

It's not a pocket device, though, too large for that. On the other hand, there's got some nifty software for the admin type available, telnet, ftp and such and you can program directly on the device. There is a serial port and infrared (I use the infrared with my Ericsson I888 to get cable-less Internet email and web).

If you need to do a lot of entry this is superior to the Pilot. If you can't lay it on a surface somewhere, though, it's not comfortable to use. Good luck.

  14. A Start menu? on More on the Samsung Linux Handheld · · Score: 1

Hello? I saw a couple of the jpegs. Is this some joke? I wish everyone had the experience of navigating a hierarchical start menu on one of the wince devices. What a ridiculous concept for such a small interface!

  15. If you don't go open source, go with Notes on Ask Slashdot: Building a Large Email Service · · Score: 1

It's robust, especially talking large figures like 25000 users and much, much higher. Notes 5 allows you to configure accounts as either Notes-only, and/or POP3, and/or IMAP. Sometime later this year, they're coming out with a version for Linux, too. The address book/directory is built for 1 million users. (Yaddah, yaddah, I sound like a salesman, whatever, but it hums along nicely at where I work with nary a choke. Unfortunately it's on NT boxes.)
