  1. from the trivia section at the IMDB on 'Fantastic Voyage' One Step Closer · · Score: 1

"Fantastic Voyage" was not quit porn, but...

"When filming the scene where the other crew members remove attacking antibodies from Ms. Peterson [Raquel Welch] for the first time, director Fleischer allowed the actors to grab what they pleased. Gentlemen all, they specifically avoided removing them from Raquel Welch's breasts, with an end result that the director described as a "Las Vegas showgirl" effect. Fleischer pointed this out to the cast members -- and on the second try, the actors all reached for her breasts. Finally the director realized that he would have to choreograph who removed what from where, and the result is seen in the final cut."

  2. There is hope yet. on Evangelion Live Action Movie · · Score: 1

I agree that making a live action EVA is extremely risky. There are countless ways to screw it up. But I think this should also be considered an opportunity. The way I see it, most of the story in the anime unfolds from Shinji's perspective. It's his world, everyone else is just living in it. (interpret that how you will) Rei is just a wacko character I can't even begin to explain. But I thought there was a gem in Asuka which could potentially be better explored. Was I the only one who thought that whole bit about her mother was a bit rushed toward the end of the series? The psychological elements of the Eva story need not be truncated or discarded in favor of mecha action and angel battles. It could be recast into the character of Asuka, making her the central character through which the plot revolves. I'm sure there are other ways to refreash the telling of the story, but I definitely believe Asuka can viably carry a live action EVA movie.
On another note, no one seemed to have mentioned casting. In other anime communities I've participated in, it has been a morbid pastime to speculate on who could take on the mantle of our favorites. In the case of EVA, one needs to determine whether you stick with the original and have a japanese cast or go hollywood. The quality of Japanese actors can certainly be spoty. One need only look at some of the drama shows that makes it over here onto the foreign language channels. Japanese live action anything has not been the same since the time of Kurosawa. Some of the films I've come across seem plain crazy. Initially, I thought "Battle Royale" was some kind of low budget B-movie wanabe. However, I was pleasantly suprised at how enjoyable this well make film turned out to be. Nicely done in all arenas: script, cast, directing, etc. It was a big cast of young actors, many of whom could easily handle the roles of the EVA pilots, if their performance in "Battle Royale" is the benchmark.
But there is this one idea which is stuck in my head like one of those annoying commercial jingles:

Haley Joel Osment == Shinji Ikari

go ahead and laugh if you want.

I'm sorry, but did I miss something here? Why does everyone think SuSE is quiting UnitedLinux?
How does "*reevaluating* our relationship with the SCO Group" get universally interpreted as "unconditional withdrawl from UnitedLinux"? If I'm not mistaken, the SuSE guy also said: "That said, we want to very clearly and unequivocally voice our support of the ideals and goals of UnitedLinux and the Linux community." To me, it seems like SuSE is sending a subtle message to the other members of UnitedLinux, urging them to adopt their own posture toward SCO. I mean, it seems childish for SuSE to quit on account of one rogue member. Doesn't the rest of UnitedLinux stand to loose much more from loosing SuSE than keeping SCO? Perhaps I don't understand the group dynamics involved in a collaberation like UnitedLinux, but the impression I get from reading the threads on this story make it seem like individual members of the consortium, for the most part, do their own thing....hardly a good way to accomplish a *United*anything.

If Micro$oft is going to continue with it's current business strategy, it's extremely unlikely they will do something like this.

I'd like to venture a solution/initiative that Non-MS Advocates may chose to adopt and implement.

A very wise GNU-minded guru once said something to the effect that if someone wants a feature badly enough, someone would be willing to code it themselves (or pay someone else with the programming skills to implement it). Maybe we can apply this thought process to deal with Microsoft's monopolistic tendencies.

The problem before us is that Microsoft is trying to use it's huge market share in desktop OS to push it's own application products. Suppose we get Microsoft's business rivals to throw their combined weight behind the development of something like a utility that would de-MS the Windows Operating System? In other words, come up with a way to safely remove all the bells and whistles Gates & Associates are cramming into OS to lock others out of the market. This Utility program would then be marketed (or provided under GPL) to OEMs as a way to build better retail PCs with a streamlined custom software packages that is just right for the intended application. Gaming machine? Screw Office! Business workhorse? Chuck ActiveX (or whatever) ! Any additional programs or applications can then added as needed. At the very least, this would level the playing field.
