There's a fine line between sci-fi (futurama, buffy, farscape, etc..) and science fiction (larry niven etc..) Keep that in mind when you compare a book to a tv show, and how many hard facts you can actually place in a tv show.
Sci-Fi : Fiction who's science is an idea not entirely based on reality.
Science Fiction : Fiction who's science is generally an accepted theory or based on possibilities of the known laws of the universe.
