OK, it could happen to any negligent sysadmin (uhm, count me in). I don't have any problem with the way Microsoft runs its business (OK, maybe I do, on moral grounds). What I do have a problem with, is any kind of centralized information center. Data cannot be stored safely on one location, one system, prone to failure. I'm sure even a complete idiot would NOT have overseen this. And please, let's not even think about the consequences of one company keeping records of 98% of the desktop users. Fortunately, we do have a choice. Would be a shame to waste, considering the alternative.

I reckon it all comes down to the teachers ignorance. If they were properly educated (no, I'm not saying they should at least have a CS degree), they would know why they shouldn't use windows in classrooms. I remember reading a german governmental white paper on this, and why they decided to have linux installed in 500 schools throughout the nation. I forgot the URL, but it basically comes down to the fact the german government shares the toughts of the avarage /.-reader on these issues.

On a more serious note: the fact the russians work on a very tighter budget and still accomplish great things, makes me wonder where most of your taxes end up. I'm not (only) talking about spaceflight. Governments should realize research is the key to economic prosperity, scientific breakthroughs and quality education in the long run. You can't just cut the budget of your own future. IMHO, someone in Washington D.C. should reconsider some priorities.

    ipchains will do nicely
    - Prevent Websites from tracking your activities: Use mozilla or conqueror with cookies disabled, or set a per-site cookie policy. Use a proxy to disguise your IP if you have broadband with static IP.
    for broadband and dialup: safeweb
    - Secure your passwords and personal information: One word: Encription. Encript the data in your file system.
An encrypted filesystem is very secure but not for mortals.
    - Block unwanted ads and speed up browsing: Use mozilla with a per-syte image policy. reject everithing that comes from doubleclick.net.

This zoning-debate is a political matter, and somebody should defend our basic rights. EU, US, wake up! To hell with the IP-lobby. Pressure groups only defend the economic interests of trusts and monopolists.
I don't think sueing those companies is an option. Instead, the EU and US should encourage a more competitive market IMHO.

  11. Re:Logical Extension on EU To Investigate DVD pricing · · Score: 1

Let's get this straight with a little help from my coursebook "Economics for dummies" :-)
In order to be able to charge different prices, one needs a monopoly or at least a "trust". Logical conclusion: the EU should encourage competition. It's quite a profitable market, so a new distribution company should be able to survive. How should they do this? Allow this company to import DVDs from wherever they are cheap (...thus allowing them to make the most of exchange rates).
Second decision the EU should make: allow non-region dependent DVD players to be sold (or manufactured).
The end-user always benefits from a little competition, and the EU should encourage this.
BTW, I hope they aren't going through with the software patents.

you're absolutely right. As you might have read in a previous /.-article, in Belgium we have the same problem. The representative of the music industry was thinking about sueing ALL belgian napster users. In the meantime, CD-prices haven't dropped and downloading music became even more popular. This summer, they will triple the price of a CDR in Belgium to tackle the problem. Futile!
What they don't realize, is that most users now shifted to downloading MPEGs of their favourite music videos. The music industry should realize they don't offer any value for money. So: there are (IMHO) 2 solutions
    1) A price-cut
    2) Instead of selling legacy CDs, add some value by selling the music videos on DVD for the same price.

hey troll, last time I checked the ESA is 'doing' more in space than NASA.
They are not nearly as cheap as the russians. They can't afford to make the any mistakes because they launch a lot of commercial and non-commercial satellites.

The launch platform is ideally located, near the equator. They don't need zillion tons of fuel to get into orbit. If this hotel company gets permission from the european authorities (but I doubt they will), they would be able to save a few bucks by launching the modules from there (it's french territory I think). One would almost forget the japs have a space program too... and they would make an ideal partner in commercial space exploitation. A few years ago, they even presented plans for a hotel on the moon. Actually a city, but with a lot of private funding. Just plans though, I don't know if they are going through with it.
