Well, it's getting real close. This 3D package has it: http://www.equinox3d.com
The first two scenes on he following page run around 4-30 frames per second, fully ray-traced (multiple reflections, refractions etc.) at low resolutions (~160x120) on an Athlon 2000XP.

The renderer will be released in a couple of weeks. The program runs on Linux and it's free (shareware).
It's a pretty decent sized project (~250000 lines of C code and growing rapidly).
Experience with: -3D programming (modeling, rendering animation) -GUI design/programming -large system core design -API design. -or even 3D artwork would be very useful.
If it ever becomes a commercial product, I'll let contributors in on the profit (promise, boyscout's honor:) ).
I use a 16:10, 23" wide-screen monitor (SONY) at work, at 1800x1200.
I think, that if you keep the monitor at a comfortable distance, that's about the right resolution for that screen size, maybe 2048x1280 tops.

I think, any 4-6 person vehicle that has a worse gas-mileage than a Cessna 172 (around 16-18 MPG) and can not fly, is evil:)
However, this burning of an SUV dealership reminds me of the case when a "Pro-Life" activist killed a doctor who performed abortions.
Hyppocrats...
May I humbly suggest you check this app out:

It lets you write your own OpenGL renderer for a whole 3D window, or just a specific Geometry.
