There was an event a month or two ago called millionmanlan here in louisville and in los angeles, something like 2500 gamers in both locations. lanwar.org has info about it.
Even better, if there was a service that monitored new files, and kept track of files that were deleted, you could easily locate files without manually updating any database, and it would be simple to uninstall programs that didn't come with a "make uninstall" option, as well as, if you forget to run checkinstall before installing a program.
Slightly off topic, I know, but I recently purchased a minidisc player, and though the player is nice hardware, it complies with sdmi. What this means is that I have to "check-out" my music, and if I do so more than three times, I cannot check out that song any more. So, if I lose a disc, or data gets corrupted, I can't copy a song any more. All this copy protection does, is serve to annoy me, It does nothing with the fact that I am copying pirated music to the device, it would tread legitimatly copied music in the same manner.
You people are lame, the comment about "sim invading iraq to boot aproval ratings" was funny. Get over it, I was laughing my ass off, and thoroughly enjoying the article until the flame war began. Give it a rest, the old adage fits well here, if you don't have something nice to say, find another news site(ok, so thats not exactly how it goes, but close enough). I seriously doubt anyone took any of micheal's editorial comments seriously, but if they did, that's their problem, not his. sheesh
Another step to obfuscate linux, and keep mainstream consumers from adopting it. Sad, its things like these that are really holding linux back from its full potential.
Dude, chill out. You know what happens when you deprive your children of some of the bad facts of life, until they are adults? They finally get out in the real world, and they lose it. I think that you should, YES keep stuff like goatse.cx, etc away from them (it is not edifying in any manner), but you should also let them know whats out there, so when they see something, such as a porno, they say to themselves "hey, dad told me about these things, they are bad, I better stay away from this" By sheltering you're children, you are only delaying and magnifying the inevitable. By the way. how DO you know of all those sites, might I enquire?
Thats sweet, $25? Imagine plugging that into a spare video card, and having a nifty little winamp control/vis monitor sitting on top of your regular monitor.
Why not use unicode for everyday use, and a PDF'ish format that could have every character of said language for special purposes, i.e. historical documents.
This nuclear stuff scares the sh*t out of me

I remember, back in the day when my mother worked in a nuclear power plant, every once in a while, she would lose a pair of pants or whatever, because they got 'contaminated', just the thought of this kid, and his rudimentary methods makes me glad I live nowhere near there.
I agree with you all the way,
The type of cynicism and rudeness that always
seems to float around askslashdot articles
really gets to me. It goes back to the old adage
"If you don't have anything nice to say, keep
your mouth shut".

You need to realize that there are many companies out there that STILL use NT, I would hazard a guess that MOST windows servers are NT still.
What if the flywheels get rust? I can just imagine having to use WD-40 on my ups.
Imagine all the fun practical jokes that you could play on SETI, bouncing signals off the moon.
This was all a trick to get slashdotters to post really lame comments.
