Like health care? "Sorry, sir. I know there's a gaping wound in your skull and that it hurts, but your credit is no good here. Please go away and die outside in the gutter with all the other poor people."
It might not be that way with a head injury... but it's that way with AIDS patients in lots of cities. Not to mention those needing an organ donation. And lots of other cases since the HMO's became popular.
Because of the mention of VNC I thought I would give a post of what I want. Any hardware companies reading this?
Ok, here goes. I want a KVM switch with a built in VNC server! It should have a ethernet port and get an IP addess. Then it could use a differnet viewport for each device. Man, this thing would make remote administration a breaze!
Example from real life. A client has a group of 4-7 servers in their server room/closet. You hook them up to a KVM switch(you should already have them on one). You forward all the neccesary ports(assuming you are using private addresses behind a NAT router, which you should be) to the ip address of the switch and viola, remote administration of all your servers!!! Now, there are security concerns to be sure, but no more than using PcAnywhere and RDP or ICA. I'd buy them for most of my client's sites.
As far as I understand, DirectFB is much more for embedded systems and it's design is lacking for workstation replacement. But I do admit I don't know much about it.
This has the potential to be the X replacement tons of people have wanted. If we port Gtk(there was an initial BeOS port before) and Qt to the new GUI we get our apps. I for one would love it. I would also like to look into getting a VNC server working on it so I could have some cross platform network transparency. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's see what this looks like when it's released.
My idea has been to try to use the technologies we already have to make a new system. Let's build a system around:
Pthreads, DRI, libart and Pango
Plus Mesa and SDL for games... and VNC for network transparency... This would make a great framework to build on. I know GTK is getting a Vector API based on libart, so that's an easy port. And it shouldn't be too hard to port Qt over. What are we waiting for?
This seems like it would take care of everyone's desire to replace their Exchange servers. I know I would love to be able to offer my customers this functionality(I'm a self-employed consultant).

What do you guys think?

Yep, you're right... but there is the Field's Medal... kind of the same thing...
Does anyone know what progress has been made recently on the GCTP protocol and the Openflock server?
This seems like it would take care of everyone's desire to replace their Exchange servers. I know I would love to be able to offer my customers this functionality(I'm a self-employed consultant).

If you don't have firewire on your computer yet, what kind of a nerd are you?
Check out some firewire hard drives from VST.
The prices are a bit higher than the iomega drive, but they will come down.
