I think even debian installs kde and gnome in the tasksel now. Oh well, I'll just have to skip the desktop install and apt-get install gnome by itself.

  2. I read the first paragraph and on JWZ Reviews Video on Linux · · Score: 0, Flamebait

This guy is obviously not intelligent enough to be using linux in the first place. RPM's? c'mon, use use debs at least if you're not going to compile it yourself :-) This guy obviously didn't spend any time really working with MPlayer (which by the way is my favorite player). If he had, he might have gone to the website and found the w32 dlls that allow playback of even windows media files. I've often only been able to playback some wmv files on mplayer when they won't play in windows media player! So after the first paragraph I stopped reading. Some people just shouldn't use linux I suppose, and I think those people are called managers.

  3. Good Article on Scaling Server Performance · · Score: 1

the only thing that bothered me about it was that they didn't bother to touch on any of the methods for speeding up access to the database when the queries actually need to be run every time, such as when the ResultSet isn't so static. Perhaps a method that was relatively inexpensive for determining if a resultset had changed since it was cached. I'm impressed with the stats, I'd really like to see how linux/sparc would compare to solaris on the same machine.

  5. Re:Solaris x86 vs. Linux in terms of performance on Sun Reconsidering Solaris 9 for x86 · · Score: 1

I've used solaris on x86 and sparc machines (granted they weren't the fastest boxes around, the sparc was an ultra 10/sparc2i@360MHz and the 86 was a 333 pentium 2) Personally I felt that linux was snappier on both machines although I it was less noticable on the x86 platform. I ran linux on the sparc machine for about 3 months then switched back to solaris. Why? I kept running into issues where I would try compiling software using gcc. The software would compile using gcc for solaris/sparc then not compile using linux/sparc. The simple fact of the matter is that although it's possible to run linux on sparc, running much else can sometimes be a real pain. This isn't to say it can't be done, w00t open source.

  6. I like Sam Raimi on 11 Things About Spider-Man · · Score: 1

but as soon as I heard he was making the movie. I knew it was going to be a bomb. I love the story of spiderman. Marvel had it right when they made that comic. They recognized that that a comic hero had to have depth(personal life etc..) to truly sell over the long haul. I love Marvel for that, and consequently Image as well. Sam Raimi is a god for evil dead.. the one thing that Marvel and Raimi have in common is that they usually do not make good movies based on superheroes(granted, the X-Men and blade were pretty good) Darkman... Mantis... I would've picked a different person.

  7. Did anyone else find it disturbing? on Mixing Gigabit, Copper, and Linux · · Score: 1

I was noticing that the pentium platform consistently outperformed amd. Does anyone know of a good reason why this would happen? I'm currently in the process of building my first dual athlon machine, and would like to run linux on it.
