I second this emotion. When you have to all of a sudden learn a third language just to use taglibs, the functionality gains are quickly lost. While I entirely agree with the above said, I don't often simplify the jsp to just one object. More often than not I force the designer to create a template and just or it into the jsp, which allows the the core logic to take up the majority of the jsp and keeps the overall look of the page up to the designers whims. If they don't like the aesthetics of the data being displayed, they send me the corrected html tags for displaying and I make the changes.

C# taks this notion to a whole new level - notion of disconnected DB-access, where you use an in-memory cache to download interesting tables/rows from your DB, disconnect & operate on that subset, & then sync up your data.

I believe this is also available in the most recent version of JDBC, the notion of disconnected datasets. There was such a demand for it actually that there were offshoot projects that started cropping up a few years ago and as such an implementation was added to JDBC 3.0

I think the need is apparent when you try to run class files on bsd, aix, hpux etc.... It's not that there aren't jvm's for these platforms, it's that they tend to stagnate at certain revision levels. If the Core API were opensourced, it would be possible to make jvm's for all versions of the jvm across all platforms. Otherwise, we're looking at having to code everything in C using the GNU opensource libraries just to do what Sun claims java will do, run everywhere.

Only in the computer industry is any sort of recourse even discussed. You think salaried restaurant managers get recourse when they have to work 60-70 hours a week? ha! I'm not saying a salary position is bad, especially in the computer industry. I'll probably do it again in the future but the key is to NOT WORK A LOT unless it's called for. When I was on salary I made it a point to NOT work 40 hours a week as often as possible, it make up for the times when you have to do overtime.

How about an Ultrasparc box that runs linux? Part of the appeal that Sun has is that their hardware, while not the fastest or cheapest, is damn well made. I remember a lot of people who hated windows because they felt that windows was responsible for the terrible performance of their machine, then installed linux and realized it wasn't the software, it was the hardware. In general, X86 hardware is not as well made as other platforms.

I think what the initial poster was trying to get at was a private property. At least that's what I expected. The javabeans spec forces all properties to be private with public get/set functions. You don't really need get/set functions for default or public access. You can just specify myObject.proerty = value. It would be nice if there a syntax that would auto create get and set functions for private properties.
